Am I the only one not impressed with dennis smiths game tonight?

Sure he scored 25pts, but it took him 25 shots, plus the 4 turnovers.

I like the aggressiveness and explosion from
Him but lets not get carried away and crown him.

I thought it was ironic he was playing against Reggie Jackson JR cause that is likely his future.

On his current trajectory, he could be a really good bench PG, but he is way too much of a gunner to be a starter surrounded by better players. I like him but yeah there is a reason he couldn't exist next to a ball dominant player like Luka.

With that said the knicks should play him now and build his value up or have him play with the guys you expect to send on the bench squad

He had a good game. The 25 shots are because of bail outs and throwing up shots late.

4 turnovers isn’t that bad breh. He made a lot of good kick outs to Knox, Matthews, and Vonleh that they didn’t convert. He defended and showed the willingness to get dirty diving to the floor and even got into it with Andre Drummond who laughed at him. He’s a dog.

Bro played like a dynamic guard out there. he had 4 turnovers, but he got other players plenty of open shots and they bricked most of them. He created a shytload of assist opportunities, but most of them were left on the table because the Knicks couldn't hit shyt. He started pressing at the end and chucked up some shots, probably because he knew his career high was in reach, but he shot an efficient fg% before that, and he had some plays that should've been called shooting fouls in his favor. He didn't just find the open man, he created good looks for everybody else and didn't pound the ball to death while doing it. Plus he played decent defense too. He actually played a better game than his stats would suggest.

Edit :feels like it should be emphasized more, but Dennis was far from a black hole, he found a great balance between scoring and passing tonight.

Rumor is Philly might trade for Tobias Harris to Make a legit run and then let one (or both) of Tobias and Butler walk.

:patrice:

For us this is cool because I would really doubt Boston comes out the East with that Philly Squad. shyt they might not even make it to the ECF cause they would have to go through one of Philly, Bucks, or Raptors to do it. So Kyrie would likely bounce in that situation.

:ehh:

On the flip the Clippers would have space for 2 Max FA's, so Kwahi and ??? Would be a lock for them too. If they trade for Fultz and still have SGA I could see them going after Middleton.....

:jbhmm:

This playoffs in the East this year are going to be tough but it'll be a inflated talent market. Next year I could see a lot of talent dispersing around the league. Especially if the warriors lose KD and become "beatable" again.

DALLAS — Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle is off to a flying start in dealing with Janis Porzingis, Kristaps Porzingis’ influential brother/agent who paved the way for his departure from New York.

During Monday’s introductory press conference here, Carlisle gave a shout-out to Janis and Porzingis’ personal physiotherapist from the Spanish League, Manolo Valdivieso, who has lived with Kristaps in New York the past two seasons.

Valdivieso was at the Mavericks’ practice facility Tuesday as Porzingis went to work out in the weight room, already getting access. Carlisle revealed he had a two-hour meeting with Janis on Sunday and called him part of “our team.’’

Janis, who had a modest European playing career, wanted to be a bigger part of the Knicks’ team, too. According to sources, Janis asked for jobs for some members of Porzingis’ entourage. But nothing ever materialized.

It’s not uncommon for these type of jobs to be granted to a team’s superstar. When Carmelo Anthony was a Knick, Asani Swann was on the Knicks payroll with an official position, director of player relations. Swann was Anthony’s longtime branding manager and worked solely with Anthony.

Amare Stoudemire’s security man, Max Cayard, was named to the Knicks security staff soon after Stoudemire signed. When Anthony and Stoudemire moved on, so did Swann and Cayard.

Ultimately, Knicks brass could never satisfy Janis, whom Kristaps believes in fully. Janis felt the franchise, based on its history with Steve Mills’ past performance, was not moving in a winning direction.

During Thursday’s fateful meeting with Knicks brass, Janis delivered a list of teams high on Porzingis’ list with whom he’d want to re-sign long term — with the Spurs, Raptors, Nets and Clippers included, according to a source.

The Mavericks were not on the list — which is likely why Mavs owner Mark Cuban intercepted a question to Porzingis on Monday about his long-term future. However, money is important to the Porzingis family and nobody within the Mavericks organization believes he’d sign a one-year qualifying offer and pass on $154 million.

According to sources, Janis Porzingis became a severe thorn in Phil Jackson’s side, staging Kristaps’ missed exit meeting after the 2016-17 season. Jackson wanted to trade Porzingis at the 2017 trade deadline because he got bad vibes from Janis regarding Porzingis’ future.

Jackson could have hauled in a package from Phoenix including Devin Booker that also would have netted Lauri Markkanen in the draft.

Janis also decided his brother’s offseason rehab should take place at Real Madrid instead of the Hospital for Special Surgery.

“Janis wanted the kingdom,’’ one source familiar with the situation told The Post.

The Knicks had no idea when they drafted Porzingis that Janis would loom this large.

“He’s the big brother and wants to protect him and I’m sure over the years his ego and confidence in handling Kristaps has grown,’’ one NBA source said. “It could also be the Knicks’ fault. You have to set boundaries … but they allowed him everywhere and that created Janis knowing and seeing everything.”

Porzingis initially was represented by Andy Miller, who had a good relationship with the Knicks. Janis joined Miller’s powerful ASM Sports agency but that no longer exists.

Cuban has an over-the-top personality, so his relationship with Janis bears watching. Knicks brass no longer has to worry about it.

I'm not a big fan of his style but I'll hold back

Early days, especially with him barely knowing his teammates and coaching staff.

I think we got a glimpse at all the potential and upside that excites people about him with a good look at most of the obstacles he has to pass to reach his potential. No recap today but I do wanna go heavy on DSJ to line-up the ones that'll be coming:

The good starts with his insane athleticism. He's got the explosive first step, leap and strength all bottled into one package that makes him a NIGHTMARE going north to south. There are blow by guards, vertical players and running back types but packaging all of that in one player is pretty rare. He also has real point guard awareness, so kick outs and drop offs to cutters are in his arsenal. The bad is his jumper but with a caveat that it's been coming along since his rookie season started with a visible progression. 2/9 from three is the big one here rather than 11/25 imo because he really did become the THJ bailout option on a handful of plays. But he also missed enough open jumpers (most noticeably from deep) that it killed his FG% and made his statline look less efficient than he played.

The playmaking was another good outweighing the bad, but we can see the room for improvement. 6 assists makes me want to know how many assist opportunities he had as well because I can recall enough missed open jumpers that he created to bump that to 10. Knox was fighting his jumper again, Wes can't buy a basket, and Vonleh still isn't consistent enough on wide open three's to reward the passer consistently. Smith's pace and ability to get inside open up everything though and I'll mention his vision again because a lot of people underestimate it. He might not have the Ja Morant level vision and playmaking but he's got similar tools (honestly Morant and Smith as college players to me have a ton of similarity with the biggest difference in quality of competition imo). But there were those 4 TO's and they showed young learning PG flaws that I expect reps to help improve (same as Frank). DSJ has the super athlete PG habit of jumping while planning to pass. That's something you'll see with all of 'em and most of them cut down on it but never get rid of that habit. The more troublesome but typical one is picking up his dribble unnecessarily. We see it with Frank too; a young guard telegraphs his pass and picks up his dribble and when the defenders jump that lane our young PG is left looking for an outlet. That's another one that everybody does and drops with reps but I was still surprised that he would (again just like Frank) slip into little ruts where you could spot it happening more than once in a short span. So just to sum it up; correctable flaws and playmaking upside that tends to be underrated because his shot selection could use work means we've got some promise here.

Defense is the area of his game that I kinda hated for a good chunk of last year but where I think Carlisle has fingerprints all over the improvement. Smith's way more engaged and active defensively than where I feel he used to be. You can see his athleticism pop when he's running over to help or when a player tries to beat him with speed or strength rather than technique. There are typical young issues here too though. Footwork and awareness are both in the "needs work" category, he picks up some overzealous defender fouls and he's a follow the leader defender (aka when Wes or DJ turned it up, he kept pace but he wasn't the catalyst). If we go back to Ja Morant again, I think DSJ smokes him on defense right now and the progression is exciting.

Then there's the bonus. You don't demand or even expect that a PG rebound well but DSJ has triple-double talent because he's a pretty dedicated player on the boards. Five boards is good, 3 offensive boards as the PG is really good. He knows to follow and has good timing. As an effective pace player, getting boards and pushing is something that can bump Smith's efficiency across the board. He can be his own fastbreak. Having guys like Smith, Dot and Knox who can chase and help on the boards from non-big positions opens up more options in those spots. So that's just another exciting element.

Summary: The upside is real but so are the flaws. The promise here is that his flaws are almost entirely correctable and as long as his shot selection is good, everything else falls into place. I wasn't blown away by his performance last night but there's a clear path to being a stud out there and the cool part is that most of his weaknesses are covered by Frank while DSJ covers most of Frank's weaknesses. They're both young as hell too. Just gotta hope Perry doesn't go full "I hate phil" and deal Frank out.
