If this shyt isn't playing into a proper story in some way and it's all for shock value then yes, that's garbage. The Hostel movies were garbage. etc.
To be fair "Antichrist" had a totally different plot that some studio exec leaked so Lars had to rework the whole movie, which is why it ended up being damn near incomprehensible.

Cannes has always been home of the most pretentious critics but it seems the past couple of years they have become attention whores too.
