Hmmm I have to think about that. Bird was a better shooter and bett in the clutch. Lebron was a much better defender, passing I would say are the same, both we're great ball handlers.

Speaking of birds defense he was a trash defensive player. He ws known for playing the passing lanes but he rarely guarded SF. McHale was the one that usually guarded birds man. Bird would often guard the weakest front court player offensively.

You know that Battier guards Melo right? Lebron isn't that great of a man-to-man defender either. He plays passing lanes and weak side help, as well.

Worthy was more dynamic and a better offensive player. Im talking in terms of size and interchangeability in terms of guarding them in reference to listing them at position. Worthy was 6'9 225 and Rambis was 6'8 215

Okay yes you are right during those days the PF and SF were often time similar in height. For example Jerome Kersey and Buck Williams were similar in height. Xavier McDaniel and Charles Oakley were similar in height and so was Dale Davis and Chuck Person. Heck even in Washington webber and juwan howard played SF and PF. But I would say they were truly interchangeable offensively compared to other SF and PF combos.

Actually MJ was old he was 33 at the time. He wasn't the same player after the first retirement and relied more of shooting jumpers and posting up. Plus unlike his earlier years he would try o conserve his energy until the 4th so he could go on scoring bunches. He couldnt beat Gary off the dribble and tried to post him up. They interviewed Karl after the 4th game and I believe that Karl said he would double Jordan every play he got the ball in the paint. That is the reason Rodman killed them on the boards because the shot would go up and two or three people would be around MJ. But good find on hat article. The first three games Hersey Hawkins guarded MJ. Detlef was on pip and Gary guarded Harper because he could double off of him.

As far as Gary I am referring to his height so I wouldn't place him next to pip and Garnett in terms of defense because he never guarded SFs and PFs. But yes he was a great defender and guarded 2 and 1s. Once he learned how to knock down a jumper as a yong guard he helped Seattle become a perennial power in the west.

I realize he was 33, but that was the first of the second set of three-peats. He was still the best in the league and him adding a more reliable jumper made him a better player in some aspects, off-setting the slight loss of athleticism. IMO

Rodman was hurting them on the boards..but he also hurt EVERYONE on the boards for nearly his whole career. FWIW, Kemp was lighting him up on the other end too. He set records for O boards so youre def accurate on that assessment tho..and he was huge. That finals could have easily gone 7...Sonics just needed to pull out Game 2. (btw check out this old ass internet article: https://web.archive.org/web/19961027101953/http://www.nba.com/finals96/game2_story.html)

Going to stop de-railing this epic Bird thread with random 96 finals back and forth. Good talks. One of my fave finals and that Sonics team one of my favorite teams to watch.

Is that before or after he guarded Derrick rose the last 5 minutes of every game in the 2011 conf finals. Is that before or after he guarded tony Parker in the fourth qrt of the finals in 2013.
Is that before or after he guarded Kevin durant after game 1 of the 2012 nba finals?

Battier would only guard those dudes to conserve lebron until the fourth to conserve energy. It isn't like he wasn't guarding these dudes. He would still guard George or Kwahi or carmelo in the 4th. You are nuts if you don't realize lebron is a great defender. Team USA had him guard both Paul and Marc at PF and center in the Olympics.

Thanks for the article I still have that finals and all the bulls finals on tape. I saw pretty much all of MJ games as a kid. Anyway yes he was a 33 and not takin anything away from Jordan but he was still not the driver he was before the retirement and relied on the post up or drive then pull up jumper. I would have loved to see that Gary Payton battle the 30 year old Jordan that played in 1993. That was peak Jordan because dude had the jumper post moves and drive game. People think he came back after retirement with a more refined game but it really wasn't. He just went to the post game and jumper more often because he lost some speed and tired a whole lot quicker. He would mention that driving took a lot ou of him so he would save it for the 4th qtr. So the jumper was used to conserve energy.

You are also right about Kemp grabbing boards. The supersonics loved to play small and hey would force the bulls to play small as well. The sonics would roll with kemp at center times during the game so he bulls would move Rodman at center and have kukoc at PF. Also Rodman avg 17 rebs a game in that series. So there was some talk of Rodman getting MVP in the finals. Rodman didn't dominate in the other two finals with the bulls on the board. Malone kept him in check plus the first year they played in the finals Rodman had a bad knee and Bison Dale helped the Bulls out at PF.

Bird would have been suspended in today's NBA for his ruthless comments and dudes complaining to Silver about it

:salute: to larry legend a sagitarrius like me

Man can you imagine Barkley in this league. Spitting at people (missing a dude and hitting a kid). Telling a reporter you hate white people. Telling the white media you a real N-word and don't talk to me. Saying in front of the camera after a Saturday NBA game against the mavericks that the league and refs tried to keep the game close. Pretending your hand is a gun in the 1993 playoffs vs the sonics and pretending to shoot fans in the stands.

Hahaha Barkley was a fukking fool with it.

Yeah you need to do one on kemp. The greatest in game dunk I ever saw was when he dunked on Alton Liston and pointed at him in I believe the 1991 nba playoffs.
