Don't know about the open container laws in LA, but it most places they can't search you/take your cup without permission. You can always refuse and ask for a warrant just be ready to suffer the consequences if they threaten to arrest you, which is not all that bad bc you can sue the city...if you are willing to go through the hassle. They are just wrong for this. If people want to mix their grandmother's pain meds with Fanta that's their business.
