Unless a people percieves you as dumb or uneducated you would usually get love but when you get more personal with it they dont accept you as one of their own. Youre basically a white person with dark skin.

Ive spoken with quite a few nigerians and they all say the same thing. They look at western blacks as a different people. Even some native haitians would call me (a haitian-american) a blanc (which means white)

Dont get me wrong theyre conscious of the racial tensions all blacks similarly face around the world, but they dont live that constant reality that we do here (that we are all one). Primarily they think draw divisions if youre part of 'their people'. Either youre haitian, or youre jamaican or youre nigerian etc

I don't know if I would agree with you are basically a white person with dark skin, but I get ur point

Surprise, surprise… The business of getting “light-skinneded” is booming over in Africa.

Via AFKInsider reports:

It’s an unbelievable number: nearly 77 percent of Nigerian women — the highest percentage in the world — use skin-lightening products on a regular basis, according to the World Health Organization.

“Skin-whitening products represent one of the rapidly growing segments in the global beauty industry,” reports Companies and Markets. “With the concept of beauty in the 21st century revolving around a flawless and fair complexion, there is rising discrimination based on skin color.”

Skin lightening is big business in Africa, especially Nigeria. Take the success of a skin lightening product Whitenicious by Nigerian-Cameroonian pop musician Dencia. The product sold out almost immediately after its recent release. Three weeks after its debut in January, sales surpassed 15,000 units as demand grows in Nigeria for skin-lightening products.

Dencia is a true believer in lightening skin and said she has become several shades lighter over the years. “Why did I get a couple of shades lighter than I was? That’s a personal choice,” she said in an Ebony interview. “That is what I wanted to be… I’m very daring. I like trying things. I’m not doing it because I want to have boyfriends. And I’m not doing it because I want anybody to accept me. It’s because I just wanted to do it.”

According to Dencia, however, her product is selling best outside of Africa. Eighty percent of people who buy her products are African American, and 10 percent are white, she told Ebony. Her African market is just 10 percent, “because guess what? They don’t have credit cards to buy the products and I’m only taking credit cards or PayPal,” she told Ebony. “And they don’t have that access. I have white people from Europe, America, and everywhere buying Whitenicious.”

Whitening products aren’t cheap. Whitenicious costs $150 for 60 milliliters.

SMH. This is so sad. But it gets worse! Even some of the medical experts on the subject sound like they’ve been brainwashed:

Michael Akolawole is a cosmetic dermatologist and lecturer at Ekiti State Teaching Hospital. He spoke to AFKInsider.com about skin whitening.

“It is a multi-billion dollar market in Africa with Nigeria taking the largest chunk,” Akolawole said. “It is profitable business for the manufacturer, importers and marketers. Demand is inelastic, and with (an) abnormal demand curve, meaning that no matter the price demand will continue to be steady.”

Olanrewaju Falodun, a consultant dermatologist at the National Hospital in Abuja also spoke to AFKInsider on the subject. Falodun said use of skin whitening products is based mainly on “wrong” perception.

“There is a wrong belief that the light-complexioned ladies are more beautiful and acceptable to men,” Falodun said. “Over time ladies who are dark complexioned who have internalized this wrong perception tend to lighten their skin to improve their sense of self worth. The other reasons are ignorance and peer pressure.”

Akolawole cites his own study of 500-plus students and 500 women in the market. Many use skin-whitening products to correct blemishes, sunburn, and discoloration from early aging, he said. The chemicals used in skin-lightening products are mainly alpha hydroquinone, steroids and mercury-containing creams. Kojic and alpha hydroxy acids are frequently used.

He said he understands the trend.

“Light skin is attractive and flashy,” Akolawole said. “Dark skin looks dull except in a few cases of those that appreciate the natural black beauty.”

There are major health complications from skin lightening.

Long-term complications of skin lightening include thinning of the skin, skin infections, stretch marks and exogenous ochronosis — bluish black discoloration of certain tissues, Falodun said.

Even with side affects, don’t expect sales of skin-lightening products to decrease. According to Companies and Markets, the skin-lightening market is expected to be worth $19.8 billion by 2018, driven by demand among both men and women predominately from Asian, African and Middle East regions.

Where did you get that idea that we Nigerians hate AAs? Most of my black friends and associates are AAs. While some.may act brand new upon coming to America...believe me that's not the majority. LOL @ "do my research" when I'm Nigerian and I've been to more Nigerian/African functions in my life and have associated with more Africans than many of you on this board have. You got to stop with this prejudiced BS (and I mean all of you on this board) and resentment you all have towards us
Cause seriously when the time comes we can't afford to be divided or hate on each other...that's what they want. Just cause you've had one negative interaction with a Nigerian couple does not equate to ALL Nigerians being like that. HELL...If I was like that...I wouldnt be associating with you...now would I? You got to stop being so callous. I can't and will not speak for those types...I only speak for myself and from my own experiences.

This. I've had 0 problems with any of the cats I've met over the years. One of my good friends out here is Nigerian (I need to chill with that nikka more often).

I'd imagine the surprise you feel is the same one I feel when people tell me Jamaican's don't like AA either. I be looking like, when the fukk did that happen. Jamaicans love black folks in the US.

These threads always go into the same divisive shyt...which is sad. And kind of the reason I don't like going in them.

You've just got a bunch of AA posters in these threads who believe everything they hear read and see on American media about Africa spouting off their misinformation and drawing faulty conclusions.

It's obvious you don't pay attention to news about the continent and the nation's within it...or the inner politics of the land. Now I don't watch American TV especially in regards to Nigeria or any African affairs cause their only point is to deliver misinformation to support a biased narrative to paint us as inhuman savages, disease ridden, warmongers, scammers, literally the embodiment of everything negative. I have to thank my dad for putting me on to more relevant news sources about Nigerian affairs (he travels there from time to time to deal with family and business abroad). If I had to only watch American TV to learn about Nigeria and go on a couple experiences I would have the same muddy picture a lot of you have.

Can you drop some links on what's some good media sources for nigeria (or any African country)?

Ciroc-Life-Party-in-Lagos-BellaNaija-July2014035-600x348.jpg

I go to Spice a lot because I like the music..... to be honest there seems to be a new spot opening every other week, I literally couldnt name 90% of the places i go to.... usually they never last more than 3 years, but the club owners make their money...Nigerians are big time drinkers and the drink prices are ridiculous...

the average middle class Nigerian probably has a maid ,a driver and two or more cars...... a decent enough income

I would but this is the analogy i would give to anyone wanting to move to Africa...

If youre a truck driver in the US you can get a mortgage, have a decent salary have a nice car holidays etc... a truck driver in Africa would have none of those benefits.... however In Africa you have a far greater chance of being the owner of the trucking company than you would in America.....

One thing I can honestly say about Nigeria is If you are doing well over there it is definitely better than anything you would experience in the states, and If you are doing badly it is a hell worse than anything you would experience in the states.....

I was born in the states and I prefer living in Lagos... but thats not say its better, just better for me as a black man...

have a plan of what you want to do, the shame of it is I know so many White people, Chinese that are moving there and aint ever coming back because they have a better lifestyle plus opportunities.... we need more blacks coming over to take opportunities

because lots of Africa is underdeveloped there are lots of opportunities for people that have skills or good business acumen to make lots of money..

you may prefer Ghana or Tanzania over Nigeria, each country is different..... I would say pick a country and visit as a tourist and have a look around
