Seeing Jordan cry like that fukked me up
At this point he has now become the de facto “leader” that players and fans are looking to. After he was done playing i think he was truly done being the “hero” because he gave everyone what they wanted.
Everyone ate off of MJ from the team/owner, fans betting on games, fans who wanted a winner to root for, the league, Nike and TV networks.
But as time went on he was this person who everyone would love eternally but wanted to be solely about his business. At a time like this it’s obvious that everyone still “needs” him and we don’t know when that feeling will end. We look to him naturally because he never let anyone down. Never defeated in the finals and walked off with the bag and generations of fans who still idolize him.
Kobe took the torch on the court and now that he’s gone that torch as a retired player is vacant. What other ex player can realistically take it and the responsibility? Most of the name brand guys are doing TV gigs because it at least keeps them close to the game. Maybe Shaq can be that person since he doesn’t need the TV stuff but the things that has happened to him these last few months will either push him into a shell or he will step up. But no one knows.
Seeing MJ today didn’t magically make shyt better but he came down from his castle to public acknowledge someone who was a peer, had the same fire that he had but also to let us know that he’s hurt too and it’s the same hurt. Even someone on his level can get hurt just like us.
