If you know me, you know that I try to find humor in everything—sometimes, to a fault. Today, the humor hit me in the weirdest way. But if it makes someone else laugh or smile, it's worth it to post this.
I spent a lot of my day watching NBATV today. Of course, they're showing different tributes that teams are doing. Then it hit me as I was watching the Knicks' tribute. One of the accolades they mentioned was that he had the highest scoring total for one game in MSG history up until recently.
During the Nuggets tribute, they acknowledge his five rings. And you know Nuggets fans are thinking "if it weren't for him, that 2009 ring would have been ours." Same thing for Orlando and their tribute and their fans.
When the Spurs did their tribute, how many people were thinking deep in the back of their minds that they'd have at least two or three more rings if they didn't have to run into Kobe and the Lakers?
When Portland did their tribute tonight, they have to acknowledge that their best chance at a title in the past 30 years was throttled by a 4th quarter comeback that's become encapsulated by THAT Kobe to Shaq alley oop.
When Mark Cuban says a Mavs player will never wear #24 again, you think about how Kobe dropped 62 on them through three quarters and Dallas had only scored 61 as a whole team.
As every team acknowledges his legacy, most also have to acknowledge how that legacy was built on brutalizing their team at one point another. It feels like one last dagger on every other team.
And that's that.
