If they haven’t retired John Starks’ number, why the hell would you retire Melo’s number? I’d argue that Starks & Oakley have better arguments to have their numbers retired before you even think about retiring #7. That 90s Knicks team accomplished almost as much as their only championship winning teams of the 70s, and that 90s team had several deep playoff runs and 2 Finals appearances. Melo is 2nd or 3rd in the pecking order as far as future retired numbers go. As for retiring his number in Denver, his number will be retired alright, it’s just a shame his name won’t be on that #15 Jersey.

Starks should probably be up there due to his connection to city alone

Some of those fans really loved that nikka like he was AI or something

Iverson wouldn’t do anything with Melo’s rosters. He’d win 37 games. At least Iverson’s teams were elite defensively which was what really drove them and their roster was more comparable talent wise to league average compared to Melo’s Knicks in his era.

Those Knicks teams had several players in the rotation who were not functional NBA players. Those were awful teams not to be compared to the 76ers. Phil Jackson destroyed the Knicks.

The team success wasn’t there but individually he was one of the greatest Knicks ever. He restored the feeling for a bit leading us to our best years in over a decade. He took that challenge on and wasted his prime on bad teams. It was a mixed bag but he was our guy.

Knicks rafters are empty why gatekeep something that’s meant to celebrate the history of the franchise. I’m not against adding Starks, Oakley, Mason, King, and Melo.

Iverson a flat out better and more impactful player than Melo breh.

Melo didn’t come close to putting to type pressure on defenses that AI did.

Give AI Amare, Tyson Chandler with wings like JR and Shump and they damn sure don’t get packed up in the 2nd round by that Pacers team.

Iverson wouldn’t swing that series.

That team is beloved but they were old and out of gas by the playoffs. Tyson Chandler is a huge reason we lost the series. He had bronchitis and he got dominated by Roy Hibbert. Roy was a legit dominant big on both ends in the playoffs that season.

Amare was washed. Shump is a bum. Kidd was completely done.

Sorry I don’t see how Iverson overcomes the factors of the team/series and that Indiana defense makes it tough on AI wouldn’t be surprised if he shoots below 40% in your hypothetical :manny:

That was the best team around Melo too what came after was a monstrosity :scust:

They had enough to win that series. They just needed Melo to dominate and really leave his imprint on the series.

His numbers look good but he could never put the team on his back and will them to victory like all the greats do

AI was one of the great playoff performers of all time. We’ve seen him come out a drop 50 multiple times. But when the Knicks needed Melo to do that he came up short…

Dominique was a better player than Melo. In his prime (1985-94) he led the Hawks/Clippers to 44.6 wins/year; if you take out the '94 season he was traded, it goes up to 46.8 wins/year; if you take out his '92 injury season AND rge year he was traded, he had Atlanta winning 48 games/year...

Nique played 73.7 games per year; 77.6 games/year taking out '92...

He made the playoffs 6/9 years in his prime, and was 3-6 in playoff series, which isn't great either---->buts it's 3x as much winning as Melo brought New York...

This aint a real comparison, on average you were winning 5 to 11 more games per season with Dominique as your franchise cornerstone, than with Melo. Go look at some of those Hawks teams he was on, they weren't loaded either...

The team accomplishments matter when you're an individual of Melo's caliber, bruh. How could they not? Melo won 37-40 games/year, and one playoff series his entire Knicks run. Iverson didn't have great Sixers teams aside from '01 and still won more than one playoff series. Some of those Sixers teams were fukking terrible and he STILL won three playoff series with them (outside of '01)...

As a player, that's the level Melo is on, he should be on AI's level, but accomplished less. Like what standard are we holding Melo too bruh, you in here comparing him to Collison and Allen getting retired 🤣 the expectation of an elite, marquee player is not 40 wins/year and one playoff series win, that's not jersey retirement status...

You never seen Dominique Wilkens play to make that assessment. Shutup.

Those of you who are saying that Melo played with trash supporting cast in New York have to remember that Melo wanted to get traded to New York in the middle of 2011 season instead of waiting for free agency after the season and joining them that way.

In a trade the Knicks gave away Wilson Chandler and Gallinari, who were still valuable pieces at that time. He could've waited for free agency and found a way how to keep supporting cast in New York still strong. And then used some of those assets to get who knows what.

Gotta move smarter and think about yourself. He helped Denver get some trade pieces in return and they still disrespected Melo years after.

Putting obvious bias for #7 aside, the Knicks (ironic) and Blazers already set the precedent of having a number retired twice

Denver as a franchise was dead for years before Melo was drafted and made them relevant again, on and off the court. There's no reason 15 doesn't go up for him AND Joker unless there's still bitterness for how he left.

For example. Dwight Howard got inducted into the Magic HOF. Maybe this sets up to where #12 finally goes up as time seems to heal wounds, but 5 players have worn 12 since he left, and they gave #12 to Tobias Harris as soon as they could, cuz they felt a way.

To be fair though, the Raptors were giving #15 out to bums left and right after Vince left the way he did and it still went up in the rafters

There’s no way the Nuggets ever retire Melo’s 15, the way he left and the bitterness from Nuggets fans makes it a lock that it will never happen. He should be glad that the Knicks would even entertain retiring his number, because he didn’t do nearly enough to justify having his number retired. Teams like the Wizards & Pelicans would do something like that, but the Knicks should have higher standards. He doesn’t deserve to have his number retired for two organizations, much less one.

But how they gonna retire Starks’ number but not Bernard King, Rolando Blackman, or Allan Houston?
