What makes those athletes amateurs? Is it because there isn't a national professional league that pays them million dollar contracts?

It’s never made sense. It was exploited by other countries. For instance the 1988 Soviet team that beat the last college U.S. team had 5 dudes in their late 20’s or 30’s on the team. They were full time professionals but could claim amateurism on technicalities.

IOC is like the NcAA they hide under the guise of amateurism so they don’t have to properly compensate athletes.
