I didn’t play any of .5 games brehs. Do I need to watch YouTube vids for the story or can I just hop in? It’s been so long since 2 I don’t remember much from it either tbh:francis:

I've never played any Kingdom Hearts games.

Do I need to play Kingdom Hearts (1 and 2) before I play Kingdom Hearts 3 to know the story well or don't need to?

@Kamikaze Revy @winb83
If you've never played any Kingdom Hearts game you are going to be absolutely lost with the story in Kingdom Hearts 3.
I played the first 2 and had to watch a half hour YouTube video to fill in the gaps from the spin off games that I didn't play to get a handle on the story.
Basically, if you only played the first 2 you're going to be lost, so watch a YouTube video to help.
If you never played any of them, nothing is going to make sense to you at all and it's a shame, because the game is fun, and is incredibly gorgeous.
They did an TERRIBLE job with this series in terms of the story and the releases.
To fully understand the story you would have had to play all these games which launched on different platforms over the span of 17 years.
You have releases that originally came out on: PS2, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, Nintendo 3DS, and now PS4/XB1.
They did release HD versions of each game later. I own them, and tried to force myself to play them but quickly found myself without the interest in trucking through what felt to me like incredibly dated games with too many monotonous sections for me to truck through just to hope to understand a story that I knew at the end I would still be confused about.

The story involves multiple versions of each character (good, bad, neutral) as well as past, future, and present versions of themselves, which....can travel through time.
To give you a slight bit of hope....if you're really interested in playing the game still even though you never played any of the other ones, just know that the overarching plot is simple enough to follow: The good guys are trying to save their friends (Some of which are lost, some of which may have been capture by the bad guys, some which may not even remember who they really are due to the different versions of themselves I previously mentioned). The bad guys want to rule the world (and yes, they have alternate versions of themselves that exist in different timelines and in the same timelines, all with different names depending on their appearance in each timeline). So the plot is simple enough to follow, but you won't ever have a clue of who is who, and why they care about anything.

Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with me. I was planning to buy Kingdom Hearts HD collection before I buy KH3 but I'm confused with "1.5" and "2.5" Remix?.Why they having them as 1.5 or 2.5 Remix instead of saying KD1, KD2?

Because they're completely separate games that happen between each other. They involve completely different characters.
It's a mess breh. Like I said...for the "full experience" you would have to play every one of those games on that timeline picture I posted. That timeline has the games in order by story, not by release date. If you were to go that route (which God help you if you do) you're probably looking at over 125 hours of gameplay before getting into KH3.
If it was me, and was really interested in jumping in with no experience I would watch a bunch of YouTube videos and say screw it, and just jump into 3 knowing there's going to be a lot I won't understand, but at least I'd get to play a fun game, with great graphics, and incredible music.
To me...the hardest part of trying to catch up by playing the old games is that IMO they aren't that fun...at least today they aren't. The games to me, feel VERY repetitive and they are FULL of boring sections. This new one KH3, is a much more fast paced game in terms of story and game play.

To clarify the 1.5 2.5 thing...those are HD re-releases that contain the spin offs as well as the KH1 and KH2.
They had released a complete edition called "Kingdom Hearts The Story So Far" which had every single game in it but it sold out fast.
Right now, if you wanted all the games, you would buy KH1.5 Remix, KH2.5 remix and KH 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.

I have a few questions and never played a KH game so bear with me.

1. Can you skip cutscenes?

2. Do you have to grind in this game? If so, how much grinding is necessary?

3. Are there random encounters in this game?
