I have a feeling the impact of the story will be lost on me as I don't know shyt about KH's story as I played 1/2 more than 10 years ago.

Story wise yea. If ya last game was kh2 you don't know anything about the fates of the bbs trio or MX. Hell even most of Riku's character development to who he is now happened in DDD.

With that said KH3 is supposed to have "memories" of the plots of the past games. But to be 100% honest i dont see anyway they can fit everything into that. Your best bet would be to watch a timeline video. But even those are pretty lengthy and besides everglow series they probably leave out stuff.

But honestly u dont need to know "everything" to get the general story of whats going on. Only 100% necessary info i think needed going into this game is the fates of the bbs trio, what happened to Xion, and what MX end game is (which was explained at the end of ddd)

Everglow's recap is amazing and the best there is. But it's hours long. Just to get a quick refresher i would watch this



And then watch the bbs secret ending.

This one just came out and it's "not bad" It's missing some secondary plots such as well everything in ux/malificent and pete/some coded stuff etc. But like i said earlier you don't need to know "everything" to understand the general plot. And this video follows what i was saying. It covers what u absolutely need to know going into kh3.



Also there are tons of copies out in the wild now so REAL spoilers are gonna be out as early as tomorrow. Stay safe out chea!!!
