The one thing that you said that's true here is, "to you". It is hard to describe something that's just conjecture. You most likely just fell outta touch with fighters.
I started with SF1, and played every single Capcom fighter from then except TvC and SFxT. When they went "2.5D" they introduced some of the issues of 3D games. I was at Evo where we first got to play MvC3. EVERYONE was jarred at how weird 2.5D was. It is what it is. It's not the same. I didn't say it was unplayable garbage, but you can't use 3D models and mitigate all the differences.
Bruh show me a sprite based fighter with this level of flourishes or post move animations. ResetEra i know.
The Animation Flourishes of Street Fighter V - An Appreciation (a LOT of gifs/mobile warning)
The romanticism of that era is fukkin ridiculous, Pallet swaps, reused assets, and long patch cycles. If a game like that dropped today it’d be crucified.
3rd Strike and the last 2D Guilty Gear are the pinnacles. "Flourishes". Debateable I guess. Post move animations as showed in that thread are really stupid IMO. Who wastes motion like that in a fight? I assume they thought that was a good way to mask recovery frames? Okay
. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Sadly, that sort of effort will likely never come back. I will admit SF5 is a big improvement, but they will probably nevee make it play as well as well done 2D. If you like it, cool. If me (and most if not all of the players who were deep in the FGC during the transition are just "old" or "out of touch" whatever insult you want to throw, so be it. Facts are facts. If the Internet Archive or Wayback or whatever has the complete Shoryuken.com forums, this was broken down ages ago. If you like it, good for you. It's cool to me, but still an inferior experience. I still play SF5 because it's SF, but I am not paying full price for new style KOF with nickel and dime tactics for the good characters. Maybe when the complete edition is on sale.
