To be fair, he did turn that program into a national power in a state with literally no 5-star HS football players. He was also surrounded by USC & UCLA who run that West Coast recruiting region. It's not like he was at some school in the south or traditional power with NFL prospects all around him and couldn't win. Oregon's problem has more to do with talent considering Ohio State beat them being basically what Oregon would be with NFL prospects everywhere, the only difference being the tempo aspect of the offense.
And honestly, ever since Howie Roseman took over the Eagles as GM, they haven't really been a threat. He took over in 2010 and kind of put them on a treadmill. Their last real run was in 2008 when Reid was still running the ship & Heckert was the GM.

That's actually a really good point. That helps but it's still hard because if I'm not mistaken Phil Knight was backing them for a while and they didn't take off until Chip became O-Coordinator. All these other colleges have shoe deals too...only so long you can offer an 18 year old free Nikes over 80 degree weather, palm trees, & better looking girls. Kind of like how Notre Dame used to flex their TV deal to recruits, but it's irrelevant now cause everyone has TV deals.
