That Budden analogy was stupid

Lol@calling this selling out..

:dead:

Selling out is not saying true to yourself and your art. Selling out is creatively limiting yourself to certain subject matter to remain relevant when you want to venture out and make different kinds of subject matter. So when Jay says "Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense but I sold 5 mill, I ain't been rhyming like Common since" that means he's making music for the sole purpose of money. I think it's fair to call that selling out. If Flo-rida wanted to make political music but didn't because he knew his fans only would accept pop music from him that can be labeled as selling out.

I'm shocked no one mentioned Melonie Fiona, her most popular songs were "heartbreak" tracks (It kills me, 4AM) and her career never took off, its sucks as shes a dope singer to me :ehh:

Seems like Melonie cannot get that cult bitter black women following, maybe Beyonce with her hoodrat anthems and Keisha making her heartbreak songs has them satisfied enough that they don't care to check any other singer for that type of music other than those two, who knows :ehh:

I wonder if Keisha ever thought about just putting one pop song on her album and get that Top 40 money and the songs on the rest of the album she could sing her "happy" songs.

Sort of like the reverse of Lupe's Lasers album where "Out of my head" was the only true sounding urban/Hip Hop song on the album.

Video: Keyshia Cole - Trust And Believe

It's a damn shame her fanbase put her in this box. Truthfully she wants to sing about happiness but her last album flopped, she ain't been singing bout happy since.

What you mean her fanbase put her in a box, how much push did her last album really get, now I don't really pay much attention to radio or TV, but I didn't hear much of her music at all.

So many artist have made a living making sad songs, you think if Sade switch her vibe, and started making all happy sounding songs halfway through she would be as big as she is, hell no.

Some artist are just better at conveying certain vibes, and emotions.

Who knows? The best artist display a wide range of topics and emotions.

Only in urban music does this kinda shyt happen.

fukk outta here. You think Carly Rae Jespen and Taylor Swift are making the kind of music they REALLY wanna make? You think there aren't/weren't punk/metal/rock/white kid angst bands making "mad" music when they were really happy as fukk?

The music industry is FULL of artists who aren't doing the kind of "art" that they want to do because the labels don't think the people are gonna buy it.

i don't think keyshia has to stay in the man hater lane to appease her fans, but she just grew too quickly for them. it took MJB 11 years to get happy, and when she dropped love & life (albeit it was wack regardless of content) it alienated her fans at first, but then they were able to rock with her, they had time to grow up out of that bitter shyt. keyshia changed her tune by her third album (3 years into her career) and was super happy by her last release in 2010, i don't think her fans were ready for the quick turn. she needs to create a balanced album to transition them more slowly.

Pop artist most certainly have more freedom as adults than r&b artist do. Taylor Swift is making the kind of music she wants to make. She has the leverage to do so. Her label wouldn't keep her on the shelf if she wanted to make different kind of topics. At her age what do you think she wants to sing about? Revolution?
