In sum, his parents spent $240k on the front end to put their kid in position to make $180k per year on the back end with no student loan debt and the potential to obtain and secure an elite network.
:lawd:

Example:

In 2000, Forté was arrested at Newark International Airport after accepting a briefcase containing $1.4 million worth of liquid cocaine; he was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and conspiracy to distribute.[2] He was convicted and sentenced to the mandatory minimum 14 years after being found guilty, and incarcerated at FCI Loretto, a low-security federal prison in central Pennsylvania.[1]
...
Carly Simon and her son Ben Taylor were advocates on Forté's behalf, believing he did not receive a fair trial; they fought for an appeal of the mandatory minimum drug laws that remove a judge's discretion in a case. They met Forté through Taylor's cousin who was a classmate of Forté's at Phillips Exeter.[3] "Carly is a mentor to me, a guide, absolutely my spiritual godmother," Forté has said.

With the help of Senator Orrin Hatch, Forté's prison sentence was commuted by President George W. Bush on November 24, 2008.[4] He was released from prison four weeks later, on December 22, 2008.[5][6]

Yea I’m getting my suit game back up. I only have a black suit from men’s wardrobe I brought a while ago.
But I’m thinking about getting either a grey(dark) or navy blue suit next. My pops was saying I should get mine from Burlington coat. What you think?
IMO, you need to have a grey, navy, and black suit at minimum. Expand your suit game, afterwards, but have those colors at least.

Does Burlington tailor? I’ve gotten a suit or two from there when I was younger, but I’ll go to Jos A Banks now. Had to get a suit from there for my homeboys wedding a few months ago.

If we had kids, we'd homeschool until hs, but send them to the right camps, involve them in the right extracurriculars, etc. So they'd be socialized, but from a distance.

It wasnt a healthy environment for the psyche of unprepared black children. Everybody i know who made it thru unscathed mentally is weirdly motivated in some way to go against the herd. Even my man, whose family actually paid his way thru these institutions, is weirdly focused on doing it his way. Never had a scholarship, never applied for the affirmative action internships, etc.

Not bc he wasnt firm in his blackness, but bc he felt he would be giving them a sense of ownership over him. Take a look at our alumni publications and you see exactly who and what they were trying to advance. :sas1:

Yea I've been thinking about homeschooling my kids if I ever have any. I was speaking to a guy at a gym the other year. He home schools his kids, his little ones be jumping one or two grades at a time and they usually get all their work done by noon.

I'm big on sports so I'll probably send them to the wolves middle school/jr high.

Everyone talks about gaining social skills and public schools. I actually think public schools are more detrimental to a child's social skills.

Where you get your suit from depends on how much money you got.

I can tell when a man has on a cheap suit because of the material and it's not tailored correctly.

And this is why understanding tradeoffs and opportunity costs are important, especially for men. Generally speaking if you want your child to be competitive at that level you have to make several huge tradeoffs. And that may mean sacrificing living in a Tier 1 city, having only 1 kid, buying a smaller house in a great school district, or waiting to have kids until the late 30's (this is another reason an age gap is beneficial).

My ex didn't understand how I wanted to raise a kid and that's why we broke up. I had a lot of peaks and valleys in my academic career, and my parents not understanding the role of financially investing in your kid played a part. Like many working class parents they wanted to simulatenously self actualize and help their kids self actualize, but that only works if you make alot of money.

However, my ex like my parents believed that academic outcomes was mainly about individual talent and hard work. Whereas, having competed and worked with the upper middle class understand those factors are neccessary but insufficient, they emphasize financial investment in education and creating networks so that their kids can benefit from being plugged in throughout their careers.

The difference in mindset and process is how my friend whose parents paid $20k per yr/$240k total in private school, ended up receiving a full scholarship for both undergrad and law school, and eventually got a job at elite firm making over $180k a year. In sum, his parents spent $240k on the front end to put their kid in position to make $180k per year on the back end with no student loan debt and the potential to obtain and secure an elite network.
While I see your point and absolutely agree with you I think the same or similar results can be achieved without over spending on preliminary education.

I know a family with 6 children. Mother a pharmacists and father an architect. The never paid for a dime for private school or college. The moved to a well to do neighborhood and had their children attend public school. They told all their child that it was an expectation that they all go to college and that it was their responsibility to find a way to pay for it. Either they got a scholarship or they joined the military. Every child either took option 1 or 2.

They have 2 dentists, a sports medicine doctor, a lawyer, accountant and the last one is currently at NYU on a scholarship. I cant remember what he is in school for.

So while I agree with you about connections and where you attend school matters, throwing money at the situation isn't the only solution. We can achieve greatness without spending millions of dollars to do it.
