A lot of emotional responses in this thread, but he ain’t lying. If you want to be in a high position in corporate America, you gotta play by the rules. It ain’t for just Black people either. It’s not like you see white dudes with long or eccentric hair being Vice Presidents of major corporations.

This is America though. If you wanna rock long hair or locks, you can choose to be your own boss and make as much money as you’re able to.

You can talk about how you don't see too many brothers with dreads at the top of corporate structures, but how many black C-Suite Fortune 500 managers are there to begin with?? This is more blame-shifting bullshyt meant to imply (directly or indirectly) that WE are 100% responsible for our failure to move up the corporate ladder when they're barely letting us in the mailroom.

No this is just an assessment that the few of us that have those type of jobs don’t tend to have locs or gold teeth. In fact most of them may not have visible tattoos either. Maybe it changes in 10-20 years.

He's "right" to an extent, but if you go along with this type of thinking, you're part of the problem and part of the reason these stereotypes still exist.
I respect people who push against these types of standards (dreads, tattoos, etc) because they're helping to challenge these beliefs. We've seen things get more lenient and I'm hoping eventually people won't be harassed/dismissed for their hairstyle.

Why does someone having dreads disqualify them from fitting into the vision of the company?

If it's my company, i wouldn't mind, as long as its neat.. For someone else's company, I have no idea.. If people have rules in place I don't agree with, I go elsewhere.
