It all goes back to instilling confidence in black boys which can help give them a fighting chance.

fukk it, I'm gonna say it...parents, stop making your kids (sons, especially) fear you.

I get my fear of failure directly from my Father.

Again, no, keep them in a child's place, but, the home and childhood should be the first time they are experimenting with failure.

If a belt is coming at the end of EVERY indiscretion the lesson becomes not too different from the plantation.

Great show, a lot of the fear of failure comes from social anxiety and not having a financial and psychological safety net. The caller pointed out that he didn't want to be shunned, this often stops Black men from taking chances and taking the path of least resistance.

I like that he brought up hiring coaches, I have several of my attorney friends who dismiss the idea of hiring writing coaches even though they are relatively inexpensive. Ego, being cheap, and misguided notions of grit get in the way of choosing the most impactful process.

I didn’t know there was age discrimination with sales like that, even when you work there. I believe they say IT and Tech is like that? Correct me if I’m wrong.

Anyone know what other fields are like that where they discriminate against your age like that where they try to get rid of you?

I agree with this 100 percent... but I must say you can be useful/valuable in ways that have nothing to do with income.. matter of fact, it may not actually be able to translate to a dollar amount

yea networking and having resources, having money and being high value aren’t the same. You can make a lot of money but be terrible at managing it. You can have a gambling addiction or drugs.

A lot of people get turned off when he starts talking money cause they think he saying you have to be rich to get the girl and that’s not what he saying at all.

Most careers if you didnt climb to senior leadership at some point they get you out of there because you make a ton of money just from annual salary increases but your financial impact for the company has peaked. they rather replace you with someone younger and cheaper.

usually happens your late 40s/early 50s.

This. It ultimately comes down to financial impact. If your contributions aren't driving at least 5x-7x your salary, there will come a day when you are too expensive for your company.

yeah im at the career stage now where alot of people just get to it and coast to retirement. In tech companies worth a damn you at least eventually have solid equity where retiring in your 50s and doing some advisory/consulting work every blue moon is no biggie.

You were right to point out senior leadership as opposed to middle management. Mid-level managers are more likely to get the ax as opposed to valuable individual contributors.

Being a mid-level manager for extended periods is a dangerous place to be. Because your skills can atrophy. And your contribution to the top and bottom lines is much more difficult to measure.

Black men should aspire to be great individual contributors, soak up the knowledge, bounce around companies to maximize salary and then strike out on our own.

Or, move up the management chain into senior leadership.

Those are the two paths in corporate.

Yeah and ill use tech again as thats my area, many people opt to stay IC’s vs taking on management as after senior level you can go the Principal route if you are really good and you end up becoming a strategic asset to the company (i.e you’re the guy who created the file structure used for an operating system). You end up being worth more being in the company than outside giving away that game.

the thing is it is EXTREMELY difficult to get to Principal level as its essentially parallel to leadership. Most people reach Senior Level and stay there forever.

The edge black people have is if we stay in shape we look young so even of we take a minor paycut later on our career to stay afloat red flags dont get thrown in interviews because an elderly looking person is being interviewed

This! Major key for Black men is to not get :flabbynsick: Cut the drinking so your face doesn't look old and dehydrated.

Shave the shyt off if you're balding. Cut the mustache and beard if too much salt and pepper starts showing up.
