What is a provider? I hear women say that they want a man who can provide. What does that really mean and can you define it without saying cliche statements.

Is being a provider based on gender, meaning I never hear women who are gay/bi dating other women ask their other women to be providers, the provider tag seems to always be placed on men.

When did this statement become the go to saying in our community? Did our grandmothers, great-grandmothers say that they were looking for providers?


I ask a few ladies, what is it meant when they say that they want a man to be the provider, they stated that, the man should provide stability, protection and take care of the bills. the cliche answers.

Who determines who is the provider was my follow-up question, what qualifies this man as a provider? I got crickets, a bunch of cliche statements, pretty much saying that the man has to provide protection, stability, and take care of the bills

Then I asked, can a woman be a provider? and when does a man stop being a provider? They stated, yea a woman can provide, then I asked, why you never hear men say that they are looking for a woman to provide then? I got the "dayum I never thought about it in that way "laugh" that chick do when they don't have an answer or seem to be stuck, then the whole "what"
"what you talking about" then I repeated what the chicks said, you said that women can be providers, and I asked you why is it that men state that they want a woman to provide?

Again, giggles and laughs, then I asked, if two women date each other, both are fems, who is the provider in the relationship? Lol, at this point, I got the nonsense answer, well, they both can be providers, then I asked, what are they providing, I went back to my original question, what are both providing? Can they measure that in the relationship.


I then went straight to the gut, why can't women just say that they want a man to make more money than them, and to fund the lifestyle that they see others having. Will it come as them being gold diggers, so placing the "provider" tag on the request and want lessens the gold-digging aspect? or is it just a cliche statement/cool to say that you want a provider?
