Brehs gonna be 45 and still trying to look like this:

and this nikka almost 40.

y’all really don’t see how this might make you look crazy in the presence of well dressed men?

Yet in his field hes more successful than a majority of cats who have to wear suits daily.

I really dont get the endgame here. So dudes cant wear shyt they feel comfortable in, in their leisure time :dwillhuh:

And I literally just wear black. Thats it. But Ill be damned if I care what the next man got on unless is absurdly gaudy. And even then, ill care for 2 seconds and be on my way.

But why do you keep talking about wp tho? Other people see us too. :skip: You dont think black kids notice how we dress? How we present to the world?

He only used birth of a nation to illustrate the effect of an image created 100 yrs ago on our lives to this very day. He's talking about how we look to ourselves and the images we allow to circulate. He then segued into sports media- a lot of whom are bp themselves- shytting on kwame brown for 20 yrs, and how all but the most hypermasculine famous bm eventually get called gay (even Denzel in the 80s), etc, etc.

Same shyt we talk about here everyday.

I’m not bringing up White people...KS is bringing them up and I’m responding to what he’s saying. I gave you the quote, the nikka said in so many words “The media says you’re a thug nikka, show them you’re not by not dressing like a thug nikka” and my point is I wear suits all the time and to the media I’m a thug nikka in a suit. I’m all about elevating our look but I’ve seen brothas in Jordans, Jeans, and caps that wore them so professionally, sophisticated, and well-kept...I’ve learned that you can wear anything and make it look sophisticated if that’s who you are.

Now I understand that he’s talking about our internal politic and how we see ourselves but his answer for us is to cater to white sensibilities which is why he mentioned the media and contradicting their narrative in the first place. He wants us to appear in a manner more palatable to White people and I can’t get with that because White people will never respect anyone they have more guns then.

On top of that, this dude said Black women are not attractive and have manly features, said Black men talk funny because of our big lips...I’m not giving this moist nikka any benefit of the doubt with this buffoonery he be on.

Respectability politics based question about modern racism.

Try not to get in your feelings before answering the question. Because I know how some of y’all can get emotionally triggered.

But in the last 30 years we’ve seen hundreds (maybe thousands) of clips of Black men being beat, abused and murdered by the police.

In all of these videos. How many of the Black male victims were wearing a suit at the time?
Why don’t we go back to the 40s, 50s, 60s where everyone wore suits and still was getting beat, abused and murdered by police. Changing into a suit doesn’t change anything. Change from inside with your mindset.

Two things:

1. Respectability politics is rooted in White Supremacy. During slavery they allowed the "good house slaves" to wear handmedowns from the slaveowners while the field slaves wore rags. This created the belief that as long as Black people dressed like their slaveowners, they would be respected:

Dressing for Freedom - Abena L Mahoon

2. The reason Steve Jobs, Zuckerburg and other successful people wear the same basic fit every day is based on the theory of Decision Fatigue. Successful people don't spend valuable brain power on mundane things such as wardrobe

Decision fatigue: Effects, causes, signs, and how to combat it
Well put together sir. We should model what successful people are doing, what they wear is insignificant.

What do you assume a black man in a suit in NYC in 2021 is doing then? Most people successful or not just wear casual clothes from my experience. Department store, high end security and doormen are required to wear suits so that’s what I assume.

Being a black man.

Wether you want to admit or not your imagine is everything and you will be judged by it.

And yes people will treat you differently. Cal it unfair all you want but that’s natural habits for humans
I disagree, people will treat you differently based on how much value you bring to their lives. If you are a pretender then your image is all you got.

Brooklyn keeps on taking it.
Your style should match your personality. I will leave it at that. If you wanna wear a blazer to go grocery shopping in 95 degree weather then more power to you. :manny:

lol

You think suit dressers wear suits 24/7?

A white v neck shirt and comfortable light slacks and white tennis shoes and nice hat or not will work.
