The Nets would demand a King's ransom for KD and whoever paid it wouldn't be able to contend probably for the rest of KD's career. KD threw a tantrum and after the Nets sat on his request realized this was the best situation for him and let it go. Maybe before the Suns decided to keep Ayton he had hope but that sealed his fate.
