Why are people saying this took five years? He dropped DAMN five years ago and had to work it first. Those singles lasted damn near two years.

Then he did the black panther album a year after that. So he probably started this 3 years ago.

He rapped over a bunch on Compton
Were those Dre beats for real? I don’t think Compton had very many actual Dre beats except talking to my diary

Edit: just checked and I was right. All the bests have “additional production by Dr Dre” but none were true Dre beats

Do you think Keem is an industry plant in a way?

They said when he first came on the scene and was on the black panther soundtrack he claimed he just sent a tape it tde and got on but didn't mention he was Kendrick's cousin.
Absolutely, to some degree he is.

But he stayed in the paint because the industry liked him.

His momma died, I asked him why he goin' back to work so soon?
His first reply was, "Son, that's life, the bills got no silver spoon"

I agree, but it's possible he had an idea of what he wanted to do with this album years ago. Kendrick tends to play the long game when it comes to his projects. He started writing "The Blacker the Berry" in 2012 after Trayvon Martin was killed. And after TPAB came out, he was already thinking about DAMN.

He said he had writer's block for two years, and the video for "N95" was shot in 2020 so I think you're right and he started working on this particular album in 2019. Remember the rumors of him doing a rock-influenced album? It's also possible he was working on his follow-up to DAMN early on, scrapped what he had, and started over to get what we have now.

Surprised Ghost was featured on here that Purple Heart joint w him on is probably my favourite joint on the whole thing

The Alchemist produced track goes hard too! Can hear literally anyone from Griselda on that beat.

Also seems like Kendrick got inspired by WSG Pray for Paris joint w the tap dancing at the end of it

All of this is possible. Artists start and scrap projects all the time for various reasons. Nas has an entire album he recorded for Def Jam that we’ll never hear because he scrapped it in favor of doing Nasir with Kanye. He’s also got an album with Swizz Beatz that Swizz has been waiting for damn near a decade to release. Kanye’s got like three scrapped albums. Ghostface has a Doom produced album we’ll unfortunately never hear. And so on and so forth.

With Kendrick we even got a peak into his creative process with Untitled Unmastered
