Naw this is wrong, if Kendrick never improves 1 bit as a lyricist, but continues to drop timeless albums on a consistent basis, he will be seen among the greats. That's what people really remember. That's also the most difficult of tasks to accomplish in hip hop. Just ask Nas & Jay how hard it is to drop consistently superior material.
Something people forget... you have your whole life... to write your first album

This is a culmination of dudes whole time on earth... in one cohesive disc. A legitimate question is... where does he go from here? But you'd be an idiot to ask that now, as this is the kind of disc that will take YEARS to fully chew through, and even then it will still be a gem worth revisiting over and over again.

Dude is literally the full package, no homo. He can spit with ANYBODY. He can pick beats with ANYBODY. He can do concepts with/like ANYBODY. The fact that nikkas are even bringing up dudes like Nas + Jay in a discussion about his first disc says it all to me.

I'm so happy brehs. "bytch, Don't Kill My Vibe" :to: :to: :to: :to: :to: I haven't even got past that song yet.

I honestly don't bump LIG no more. :manny:

It's just something about music that comes from cali that just feels good.
Ditto...

Low key... it was a mediocre disc

His simp anthem to Kelis... was the nail in the coffin.

No more Illmatic passes... I love Nas for what he's done... but a weak disc... is a weak disc....

i see both sides. on one hand, people need to chill a little. the album is dope. but it just came out...let's wait a little before calling it classic and greatest whatever (still digesting Section 80)

but on the other hand, it's undeniable that Kendrick got the juice now...

and who ever said he's not a lyricist...i simply don't get how someone could say that. I don't even like the song "Real" that much (mainly because of the chorus) but listen to what he says. like others have said it's not just about being clever with the metaphors/similes/double entendres/punchlines/multis. it's about being able to use them to say something. and i actually like the fact that kendrick doesn't OD on them cause then it would take focus away from the point of the song.

most rappers use songs as a mean to show off their cleverness. i prefer rappers who use their cleverness as a mean to write great songs.

It's just something about music that comes from cali that just feels good.

I moved from CA to Trenton in the mid 90s for a year, it sucked real bad breh, I feel your pain.

I see a few posters whos favorite rappers also had an album come out in the last couple months who are upset its getting over shadowed by this album. I won't name names but you can see who is low key hating.

I waited till the album dropped, I didn't want to fall for any hype. Bumped it straight through today. I can honestly say it's a very solid debut. Best since "Food and Liquor". Better than "Thank Me Later and Finally Famous". I think "Cole World" is close but this is a step up better. What I was most impressed with was the album didn't sound like a formula driven rap debut. There wasn't the typical club track or the street track. Kendrick really tried to make an LP. The skits really worked in giving the album a storytelling vibe. His voice and style is very unique to him but I can clearly hear some Andre' 3000 influence. The album does sound like a lost Outkast album in spots. But it's most def a West Coast album. As for the great reviews it's getting, I understand. In a rap climate that see weak album after weak album, Kendrick stands out and clearly goes to the top of the pile.

The features weren't over barring. I could of done without another Drake crying about "Women issues" verse but the Janet Sample does pull anyone of us who grew up on Janet in for sure. The Production was solid top to bottom. Honestly out of the 17 track, I really only wasn't feeling about 3 or 4 tracks. Everything else grabbed me. It was like I wanted to skip but I couldn't. This is a complete 180 from the Lupe album. I was disappointed from F&LII, he did not deliver to me even though it had it's moments. So right now I can honestly say this is a 4 MIC LP easily. Classic? 5 Mics? XXL?, I don't think so but time will tell. I agree with Kendrick. It really truly takes something 5-10 years before you can call it Classic. Sure there are albums that are instant Classics but I have to give this time. But he did come through to me. As someone who is in his early 30's and very critical of this generic hip hop being released today. Kendrick is clearly a breathe of fresh air. I agree with people that feel his voice needs some getting use to but again listen to this album people. Kendrick wasn't lazy. He made an cohesive project. There wasn't a formula at all, just a collection of songs that blended together. I really don't have a favorite song yet cause I'm still taking it in. But it did live up to the hype. Top 3 Rap album of the year. I did love Section .80 cause that felt like an LP, but this is slightly better.

The other side, otherwise
I understand how some are put off by his vocal inflections, but to me it seemed as though everything fit the way it was supposed to. Like "bytch, Don't Kill My Vibe" sounded weird to me until I noticed how the deeper, more bassy elements of his voice and flows naturally complemented the 'Urkel' hooks. And "Money Tree" displays one of the finer hooks / choruses (not to mention usages of the term 'bish'), that I've heard in quite some time. In all seriousness, that is utterly my shyt at the moment. I may have paid market price for that song alone, but since it fits in with the rest of the album so seemlessly, it would have done the whole a disservice.

I was taken back by how good this album was. Not even blowing it out of proportion, I thought this was really, really, extraordinarily fukking good.
