I mean, I agree with what the guy said, but I don't retract what I said about Kendrick.

He hasn't reached his full potential yet, and I am already amazed at the way he constructs songs.

I agree he is a talented artist, and he does have a bright future ahead of him, but all this "lyricist" talk comparing him to the greats, nas, common, etc is a bit of overhype, that's all I'm saying.

The thing you overlooked in my post was that lyricism isn't just writing a dope stand alone verse, it's about the song operating as a unit, if all it took was writing a dope sixteen there would be far more dudes on the same level of Nas and Jay-Z, Rakim and Kool G Rap, Mos Def and Talib and any other highly lauded lyricist/song writer.

With that said I hope you aren't implying that kendrick isn't nice with the pen because I can pull out plenty of songs where dude is just spitting his @ss off.
He's definitely a rapper to be respected and his song writing ability is what would put him over just being "above average".

I never said anything about it being about standalone verses in fact the Lupe examples are entire metaphors....But in Kendrick's verses usually contain a few or not many bouts of wordplay but do contain great content...i don't see how its an argument really.

Kendrick is fukking great, contending for the best out there...but just hold ya horses a bit, is all i'm saying let Kendrick become a mainstay in the game. You didn't hail Kobe or Bron as the best in the NBA from one good season did you?

Well first of all you actually did with this common verse :
:whoo: good post sir, but still delivery and lyricism are STILL two different things. Take someone who is WELL known as a lyrical powerhouse but a ho-hum delivery...like Common for instance,

We stay high, thats why old folks down us
Lost, nobody found us, the force that surrounds us
Ain't with us, they get us on the ground and hit us
We paint pictures of the chains under their names and scriptures
Removed from earth, only to return through birth
Knew this girl selling her body, wish she knew what it was worth.
Between God and trash, looking in every car that pass
With a walk that suggests head, to milk nikkaz she was breastfed
She know dairy so she say cheese to get bread
In the area where it's more weaves and less dreads
Kinda scary, amongst thieves and base-heads
Said it was her toes, but I could tell her soul hurt
She was cold turk, growing up she got to know hurt
very well in a world where self hate is overt

:lawd: that's a laced with imagery, metaphors, double entendre and the flow of it was quite simple but i stand that next to anything Kendrick wrote.

Read the bolded breh.

Second, I used those Lupe songs as examples in my previous posts to expain that lyricism isn't just about stacking metaphors, word play etc. because it can turn song writing/listening into a laborous masturbatory practice, it becomes less about the song and more about the parts that make up a song. And of course this changes with the point of the song,Hip Hop is notorious for the bragging that takes place on tracks specifically meant for that, so yeah my opinion would change if the tracks were solely about bragging.

Lupe fiasco and many other talented Emcee's understand that, so they'll pen songs that are still skillful but don't depend on literary devices to be considered that

The post I quoted is why I said what I said.

And that isn't to say I'm a dude who doesnt likes dope lyrics, I listen to Pharoach Monche, Canibus, Chino XL,K-Rino,Rakim,Nas,Jigga, Az and more daily, I love highly skillful lyricists and the cool things they do when writing.

I just see lyricism, song writing and the even more complex skill of album crafting as something that exceeds simply writing something dope.
Because I'm certain a dude like Hopsin (who I also consider dope) could probably write a verse that stands toe to toe with kendricks but I'm
also certain that he couldn't drop a "Good Kid M.a.a.D. City" because I don't think he has the song writing talent nor an understanding of the complexity on display here to put together such a project.
That's why dudes are on Kendrick right now.
That's why dudes were on other legends back then.

How good is this album really? I keep hearing people compare it to illmatic online. I'm gonna listen later tonight. If it's better than section 80:mindblown:

The Illmatic shyt is kinda far out there but I'm shockingly feeling this just as much as Section 80. I won't say it's better cause it's too early to judge plus I've been playing Section 80 nonstop for a year. I will say this is probably the best debut rap album in at least three to four years.

Bro, we not arguing that aspect i wasnt about to post entire Common songs or whatever. I'm just saying that Kendrick is good, but off the man's sack a bit and let him get a discography first. this is the first step in a AWESOME, STELLAR career and i'm a fan. I just don't want him to become dependent on his flow ability, and fully round his game...in fact Lebron is the perfect analogy to KL right now...crazy talent, freak of nature ability but when he plays the smartest and gets in the post or perfects the outside game...he'll give Jordan a run.

KL is like that, he is great now but he's missing 1 or two aspects of his skills before we talk about him in Nas, Hov Rakim levels. He's the Gohan of the game though.
