While I agree there has traditionally been even more racism against dark skinned blacks than light skinned ones, its hard for me to agree with Kelly here. First off, where are the hits? It seems like artists always want to blame any and everything for their lack of success but never address the key issue. Where your hits at though? Naturally you will compare her to Beyonce. She doesn't sing or dance better than Bey. While she is right there in physical beauty, she does not have the same sex appeal as Bey which is more of a mental thing. But most of all, where are the hits??? She had a big record with Nelly that got a ton of play, but look at Bey's resume. There is no comparison so how can you compare their success?

Kelly has hits tho ... she's had a better career than average truthfully,

there's people like Sullivan & Fantasia who are real examples of this, Kelly isn't it.

Kelly can hit the stage right now and perform old Destiny's Child songs and eat breh.

Man I can't understand that shyt from anyone that isn't a little child that don't know any better. Grown people on this shyt is lack of proper parenting straight up.

You dont know the dark skin struggle it affects men as well but no one talks about it

No I'm saying before you jump to the dark skinned issue as a reason for your lack of success, do you have the other ingredients for success in the music industry, #1 being good music and plenty of it?

Colorism is an issue but I don't know if that is the determining factor in Kelly's lack of superstardom. Sheryl Lee Ralph, who was the original Deena of Dreamgirls on Broadway, spoke about it when Dreamgirls was released and Beyonce as the star. She is a pretty lady who has been in the business long enough to know how the game works.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
R.C: How do you feel about Dreamgirls getting the Hollywood treatment?

SLR: It's hard. Believe or not in the 1980's when Dreamgirls opened we completely changed theater, we changed who came to the theater, and who was interested in theater. And now 25 years later, people find it so easy to act like we didn't do what we did. Loretta Divine and Vondie Curtis Hall were in the original company, there were some great folks who are still working today.

R.C: How do you feel about Beyonce portraying the role you originally bought to life - Deena Jones?

SLR: It's interesting, when Tom Eyen who is the creator, had this idea, he said that the Dreams, have to be three obviously black girls. Why? Because America will always go for that light, bright, long haired black girl because they will feel comfortable building her up, since they see themselves in her.

But for the obviously black girl, if she makes it, she deserves to be right there.
Because they aren't trying to push her, that's why the Dreams had to be three obviously black girls.

So when they cast Beyonce in the role of Deena Jones. I said, "Wow, this is exactly what Tom Eyen said would happen." They going to take to that light, bright blackish blonde girl because they feel comfortable with her. That's the reality.

R.C: Who would you have cast as Deena Jones?

SLR: That's hard because the industry isn't pushing her, so you don't have an obvious one to pick from. The closest one I can think of, that's an obvious black girl with that glamour thing to her is Lauryn Hill. Heather Headley is kind of close but she's not Deena. You know Deena is Diana Ross, she's a drama girl, an out right glamour girl.

The problem with this is Dianna Ross is a light skin woman

Sullivan isn't dark skin nor does she or Fantasia make pop music

beyonce is a pop star, she didn't become an american icon until she abandoned R&B and black shyt period to be honest

Mary and Flo Ballard had the strongest voices in the Supremes. Flo was also the lightest in complexion as she was of mixed ancestry. She was also too real (kinda hood). Diana is glamorous and her voice was more "pop" sound for crossover (Beyonce voice vs. Jhud/Jazmine Sullivan)which is why Barry Gordy promoted her (in addition to banging her). She also knew how to play the game and she is done well to date.

i forgot dianna ross bleached her skin over the years
but I think she was always light use to tan because the pro black look was in with the fros
it was until the 1980's she looked light skin, then again that's around the same time michael kept getting lighter lighter
