Kelly Rowland Believes Being Dark Skin Has Held Her Back

Kelly Rowland is perhaps one of the most beautiful women in the music industry. Sadly, she doesn’t think so. It’s part of being a black female in the 21rst century. Black dark skinned women are always being pit against light skinned woman and feel they have to compete, knowing that their skin will never be as light as their counterparts. In a world that has put having dark skin at the bottom of the barrel, its no wonder that dark skin women feel so insecure about who they are and have skewed visions about being beautiful. Kelly Rowland is no different.

In the past she has said that Beyonce Knowles’ mother, Tina Knowles sat her down and tried to make her realize how beautiful her dark skin was. Kelly Rowland is trying to embrace her chocolate skin. We live in a world where advertisers want light skin and white women. We love in a world that is constantly bombarding us with images of white people and telling us that the closer you are to this image, then the more beautiful you are.

Kelly Rowland is learning to love herself. “You know what I had great women in my life to help me overcome that. I remember I went through a period where I didn’t embrace my chocolatiness. I don’t know if that’s a word, but I didn’t embrace my chocolate lifestyle. Just being a chocolate, lovely brown skin girl and being proud of that. I remember being out in the sun and I was trying to shield myself from the sun and [Beyonce’s mom Tina Knowles] said, ‘Are you crazy?’ She said ‘You are absolutely gorgeous’ and she just told me how beautiful I was andhow rare chocolate is and how gorgeous the skin is, all of this stuff. And I was just like ‘Yeah!’ Like a light went off and so and my mother had me sitting out in the sun a little more, just to be a little more chocolate.”

We live in a world where black people must relearn to embrace their culture and race. They must learn to feel confident about who they are and be proud of their origins. We live in a world where someone as beautiful as Kelly Rowland should not have to feel a lack of self confidence simply because she wears dark skin.

It's the truth. She's always been my favorite member since I was a child so I kept a close eye on her activities.
She's just as good, if not better than Beyonce but she can't meet the same success because the rest of the world's mind is polluted with thinking lighter is better. So fukking sad man.

She's right. Why do people think Beyonce is where she is? If Beyonce were KR's complexion she wouldn't be where she is now in terms of success. Even if she had

the same motivation, drive, talent and the same machine behind her it wouldn't matter. Theres a thing called light skinned privilege, and Beyonce certainly has that.

Colorism is real.

Facts. Also fixed, chocolate skin is something you wear like a t-shirt. Other than that I agree with it.

The Boot to Dallas
It has look at how beyonce and nick minaj are bleaching their skin
I get annoyed how some people even use being dark as an insult. We as black people are beautiful, every shade and skin color. This pitting of different skin colors needs to stop because it only weakens and further divides us as a community. We see colorism even enforced through mainstream media with movies showcasing more light skinned women in positive role than dark skin women. Hell, we even got a light skin women who refuses to classify herself as black portraying Nina Simone in a movie:snoop:. White supremacy has literally been worked into every aspect of our life but so many negroes are too indoctrinated to know it.
