Can you explain a little more about this? :jbhmm:not really familiar with NBA contracts tbh...by moving to Toronto he can't sign as big a contract as he would've in SA, right? And he's paying more taxes by playing in Canada than in the US?
He's making less money than he could have if he had just stayed in San Antonio. (Super duper Max)

But if he leaves Toronto, he'll make even less than whatever Toronto could offer him (super max)

and the income tax depends on whether or not he claims his Toronto or US home as his primary residence.

Was Adidas not in the running for dude?

Adidas has done an awful job marketing and selling their basketball line. You can’t find most of their ball shoes at retail spots, and they are terrible at picking endorsers. They gave Harden $200 million, and nobody buys his shoes. (the Harden Vol 2 is fire though, will cop when it hits $50)

NB must be doing that Puma model of reintroducing basketball shoes to the market because I don't even see the sport listed on the NB site. He must be expecting to get a bag somewhere on the back end because I can not see leaving Jordan Brand with years of tried and true shoes and models pushing technology for the same money unless you hate the staff. What do I know tho, he's the rich one.:yeshrug:

To be fair, everyone would’ve thought he was crazy leaving San Antonio if we just based it off the reputation of the team/company.

Which is why I'm shocked they didn't go hard to get Leonard.

I could understand before the season, when his status was still unknown in terms of how good he would look coming back, but with the International appeal of Toronto, OR with Leonard potentially being in LA next season, either market would have been a great look for Adidas.

And they did a great job with D. Rose who is also quiet but his play was undeniable, I thought it was a no brainer that they would go all out to get Kawhi

Only SA could have given him that 5 year 219 million....that is gone forever he will never be able to be offered that contract again...

NBA players pay taxes in every state they visit...not just nba players but all professional athletes do...but since Kawhi was playing in texas...and it does not have a state tax...he is not paying that for 41 games...since half his games are played in san antonio...then on top of that there is the federal tax...which i don't remember off the top of my head but I remember Toronto was the highest...the line that "you don't pay any state tax in texas" is only partially true because you only play half your games in texas...you get taxed at whatever the state rate is for the games you play outside of texas...

Here is a 2017 breakdown of how Toronto taxes athletes...it's even more hilarious than I thought...the federal tax is over 50%:damn:...they don't allow deductions...so like in the nba whatever you pay your agent you can deduct that on your taxes...yeah...not in canada
No Longer a Myth: American Athletes Pay More in Toronto

On top of that...Toronto traded for him in the off season so since they get a full season of him they get his bird rights...so they can offer him a 5th year...but since only Toronto has his bird rights only they can offer him a 5th year...anyone else can only offer him 4...so if he leaves Toronto for any other team knock off another year of salary and something between 25 and 35 million dollars...what his salary would be between in that 5th year...closer to 35...

On the flipside...Derozan is bringing home quite a bit more money now...just off the difference in the federal tax and the fact he is not paying a state tax for...simplistic state...half his salary...he bringing home something like..2.7 more a year at least...

if im not mistaken:

Super Max with San Antonio - $219m (good lord:picard:)

Max with Toronto - $180m ($40m loss)

Max with another team - $140m (An extra $40m loss)

He has already lost $40m because of the trade, now you factor in taxes and whatnot he losing a lot of money right now, I can only assume

If he goes to LA or NY or Philly next season he would have lost a minimum of $80m :picard:

How is that a good strategy?:picard:
