Having no leverage would be playing it scared and just giving Kawhi away for whatever the Lakers offer by 9pm today.

There are a lot of teams who could use Kawhi to make a run this year and could try to convince him to stay beyond that. The Pacers got a lot for Paul George and the Thunder resigned him after trading for him in the same scenario.

If it was all inconsequential, it would make no sense that the Lakers keep calling about him.

Kawhi is leaving now or sometime during the season (if the Spurs aren't foolish) it doesn't matter what vets they sign, they are in complete rebuild mode without Kawhi. They will still be competitive. But teams like the Nuggets and LAKERS will push them out of a playoff spot I think.
