Magic already had 3 finals mvps up to that point and had been outscoring kareem since '86, when he got his first mvp.

1987 riley asked buck to step up his scoring as Cap was slowing down. Prior to that Cap was still the first option on the squad. Buck was always the quote on quote "leader" but he deferred to cap, so after the houston series riley told buck to step up his scoring load.
