Almost every great diss record has something of gossip qualities, hence Jay using Takeover on Prodigy, and felt he was untouchable. Nas knew Jay-Z was pretty damn insecure of himself deep down after knowing about him for so many years. Jay's ego at the time was so big, he thought Nas could only deliver a boring kind of diss. A completely different kind of set up. Nas lack of ammo for Cam and 50 are two distinct things. Theyre tolls who'll laugh at you if you even tried to hit them with a diss.I agree with this.
Look at Nas, he destroyed Jay with Ether but couldn't come up with a diss song as great as Ether to go at Cam and 50 when they was dissing him. When 50 was beefing with LOX/Nas/Game at the same time all of the LOX and Game disses were harder than that "Don't body yourself" diss song.
I mean people probably thought Jay was untouchable when Takeover dropped.... and we all know what happened there.
Drake was an easy target, any skilled rapper that was equally as popular as him could have bodied him in a battle. I was SHOCKED that Meek Mill lost the battle to Drake, no way a hood nika from Philly who could rap any business losing a rap battle to a child actor from Canada.... but it happened
What makes a diss record timeless is the impact of the reaction it causes. It's why Drake "won" the battle with Meek, but no one cared or really gave a damn when Common dissed him.
Have a catchy ass beat, the audience being engaged and surprised by the content of the song, and added complexity of the raps. And bam. You have a timeless diss. That's the formula. Folks love to see a star come down to earth. Timing of when people care is also a big factor. No one cared about the small disputes Nas and 50 probably had back then.
