Justin Lin is a talented action movie director. That's where his skillset lies.

But I'm not coming to True Detective for car chases and explosions. When names like William Friedkin and Andrew Dominik were previously mentioned it's a big step down for the F&F dude to come in. Nothing can convince me Lin has the chops to create the mood and tension expected from this series.

Better Luck Tomorrow wasn't an action movie.

From Ebert's review:
Justin Lin, who directed, co-wrote and co-produced, here reveals himself as a skilled and sure director, a rising star. His film looks as glossy and expensive as a megamillion studio production, and the fact that its budget was limited means that his cinematographer, Patrice Lucien Cochet; his art director, Yoo Jung Han, and the other members of his crew were very able and resourceful. It's one thing to get an expensive look with money and another thing to get it with talent.
Lin keeps a sure hand on tricky material; he has obvious confidence about where he wants to go and how he wants to get there. His film is uncompromising and doesn't chicken out with a U-turn ending. His actors expand and breathe as if they're captives just released from lesser roles
"Better Luck Tomorrow" is not just a thriller, not just a social commentary, not just a comedy or a romance, but all of those in a clearly seen, brilliantly made film.

I dont understand this kind of shyt

How do you know where his skill sets lie? Do you know him personally? How about letting the work speak for itself instead of presuming to know what he can and cant do.

I let Lin's CV speak for itself.

It's like if Michael Bay announced his next film is going to be King Lear. Yeah I can't judge it until it comes out but I can be pretty sure Bay ain't going to do it justice.

Although saying that I'd probably pay money to see Bay's take on Shakespeare :ohhh:

Justin Lin might be famous for the F&F movies but one should not underestimate the man's directorial skills. He made Better Luck Tomorrow, an anarchistic masterpiece that's easily the best movie about young Asian-Americans, and it also happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time.

The movie was so good that Roger Ebert got his :anger: on at film festivals to stop people from trying to talk any shyt about it.

holy hell Roger Ebert straight SONNNED that dude :laff: I like ebert a lot more now after that
