2016 NBA playoffs: Toronto Raptors snubbed Hassan Whiteside in 2014 | Heat Zone

Mere months before Hassan Whiteside’s breakthrough with the Miami Heat in 2014, the Raptors had a chance at him.

Toronto picked him up for Summer League after his time playing in Lebanon and China, but wasn’t impressed enough to invite him to training camp. Whiteside thought he earned at least a shot in camp after averaging 6.7 points on 54.5 percent shooting, 10 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 17 minutes over three games in Las Vegas.

“I guess it didn’t work out,” Whiteside said this morning. “They didn’t ever give me a reason.”

That could be a recurring theme in their first-round playoff series, which starts tonight, and Whiteside said recently his revenge tour against teams that passed him up is ongoing.

Nonetheless, his stint with the Raptors was a step forward in his return to the league, and Memphis invited him to camp a month after he got back from Las Vegas.

“It was encouraging,” he said. “It was good. I rebounded really well. I led the Summer League in blocks per minute or rebounds per minute. I was playing like 20 minutes. I averaged good numbers. I think it really helped get Memphis to give me an invite because teams got to see me. I got an opportunity to play in front of NBA scouts again.”

Whiteside’s favorite bit of trivia from his time with Toronto? The player management chose over him.

“They ended up going with Greg Stiemsma,” he said. “So they got Greg Stiemsma. Greg Stiemsma.”

In 2014-15, while Whiteside was enjoying his resurgence, Stiemsma totaled 14 points, 15 rebounds and zero blocked shots in 17 games for the Raptors. He is currently out of the league.

"so now they got greg stiemsma greg stiemsma"

Yup and the more I watch Whiteside the more confidence I get that he staying clowns on the coli and some of my homies swear he leaving us like we ain't got the Don
i dont think he leaves. he has said we are the only team that believed in him & gave him a legit shot. & look where he is now that Riley & Spo have put that belief & confidence in him.

Agreed. I still think Winslow has a higher ceiling but that boy is looking shaky on offense; it's not just that he lacks polish, but he seems to lack confidence sometimes as well.

Winslow is younger and "smarter". He knows that his shot isn't great so he focuses on making the right play.

But I've seen flashes. Look at hornets game 5 when we started rallying back. Winslow was the one creating offense, getting into the paint to draw fouls, etc.

He seems to only attack as a last resort but he's great at attacking. His footwork, balance, strength, and ability to finish through contact is pretty great.

seems like Winslow starts thinking to much when he gets the ball. he just needs to play. that is what JRich does, eventually im sure Winslow will calm down. but right now it seems he is doing to much thinking.
Yeah he is. He needs to be on attack mode if teams are playing off him or not. I can't remember exactly but I think it was game 5 of last series, where he was attacking the rim viscously even I was :merchant:. He needs to do that more to collapse the defense. He doesn't believe in his shot right now but he's made a few in these playoffs :ehh:

yea & if they sag off him he needs to pull those jumpers, or try to blow by them. you can see it when he gets the ball passed to him that he gets tight & looks for the first person to pass it to. i know Justise isnt like that in college he would make plays. but i can understand this is totally different but at the end of the day its still basketball.
