Rockets' power rotation depleted against Heat
The NBA schedule worked to the Miami Heat's advantage Sunday, with the Houston Rockets opting to hold out center Dwight Howard for their game at AmericanAirlines Arena so he would be ready for Monday's game in Houston against the Western Conference-rival Oklahoma City Thunder.
Howard, who was held out of the Rockets' preseason meeting against the Heat due to a sore back, has now missed two of the Rockets' first three games, after serving an NBA suspension that carried over from last season's playoffs in Houston's season opener.
The decision to hold out Howard left the Rockets so severely depleted in their power rotation that they signed journeyman big man Chuck Hayes on Sunday. In addition to lacking Howard, the Rockets also are without starting forward Terrence Jones, due to a cut on his right eyelid sustained in Friday's home loss to the Golden State Warriors, and power forward Donatas Motiejunas, who remains sidelined from last season's back surgery.
Those absences reduced the Rockets' power rotation to Clint Capela, Montrezl Harrell and Hayes.
The Heat's only other game against the Rockets this season is Feb. 2 in Houston.
The Heat do not play their first back-to-back set of the season until road games Thursday against the Minnesota Timberwolves and Friday against the Indiana Pacers.
