Last Friday, I was working a school and the teacher left a video for the classes to watch about MLK Jr and the Selma marches. There was a scene in there about the KKK and the students stopped and asked me what exactly they stood for. So I explained to them what the KKK was and why they were established and I even said "some of your family members/ancestors where probably apart of the organization."

It was a majority white class with a few minorities in there: Black, Mexican, Asian. I didn't even get reported for that comment. I even looked back on that and thought, I probably shouldn't have said that".

That was far worse than what I was actually fired for.

Been working at a black city school system, Anniston City Schools. The difference is night and day.

Unfortunately, as expected, these schools are in poor shape and the kids are much rowdier but I loved it ; being around my own people. I could tell I have impact just by being a stern black man amongst female teachers.

I enjoyed teaching at the elementary school more than the middle schools though. But the middle schools were much more dynamic and kept me on my toes

Sounds like that event was a blessing in disguise man.

Glad it led to slightly greener pastures, good teachers are extremely hard to find.

OP you deserved to lose your job for making that last comment. The joke itself doesn't bother me but the fact you felt you had to say it in a all white middle school classroom. Honestly you deserve to lose it for not exercising pure common sense. The "Maybe I shouldn't say this" filter did not go off in your head but it goes off in mine every got damn day and I opt to say nothing at my job outside of job related topics, movies and sports.

I am sure plenty of plenty will not cosign this but I never cosign A lack of common sense.
