Like I said, he had to contend with Hakeem who ate his food (and everyone else's food that year for that matter) by virtue of being a greater player!
However, Ewing shouldn't be greatly discredited for not being as great as Hakeem. Hakeem dropped 26 on 50% shooting and Ewing still managed to set an NBA Finals record of a total of 30 blocked shot, including 8 in one game and out-rebounded Olajuwon 87-64.
so it's not like Ewing was doing nothing, it's just that he had his hands full with The Dream. Starks had Vernon fukking Maxwell and you harp on Ewing shooting 36%?!?! At least he had the excuse of having, perhaps, one of the top ten defensive players in NBA history checking him. Starks also shot 36%, which includes that atrocious game 7, 2-18 choke job that will forever live in NBA infamy, what was his excuse? Who was checking Starks? I'll give you a hint....his name begins with a V...
Finally, Ewing was a Center, not a guard. He depends on perimeter players to pass him the ball and allow the offense to run the way it was predicated to run, from the inside out. A perimeter player needs to feed him the ball, not keep chucking when it's clear you stinking it up.
