Sometimes I think I'm the only one on the internet who thinks he's massively overrated writer. He did write Toy Story (with 7 other people) but c'mon Buffy and Angel aren't that great and everything he's done is like an incarnation of that. He writes those same type of characters into everything, and they all talk the same--and it's weird. Having him also directing The Avengers is a huge "fukk you" to so many talented directors. Alien Resurrection wasnt fukked by Jeunet, it was fukked because it wasnt needed and because of its woefully derivative paint by numbers cardboard poseidon-esque story and script. It didnt really even tell a story, it just existed for the sake of existing. I give credit to the actors who had to deliver the garbage that was written, and to Jeunet for at least adding some style to the proceedings.

It wasn't a question of doing everything differently, although they changed the ending; it was mostly a matter of doing everything wrong. They said the lines...mostly...but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong that they could possibly do. There's actually a fascinating lesson in filmmaking, because everything that they did reflects back to the script or looks like something from the script, and people assume that, if I hated it, then they’d changed the script...but it wasn’t so much that they’d changed the script; it’s that they just executed it in such a ghastly fashion as to render it almost unwatchable.

Smells like sour grapes to me. MY SCRIPT WAS AWESOME AND THEY fukkED IT UP....no they didnt really change much...THEY JUST fukkED IT UP!

I'm not saying the film doesnt have issues aside from the script, it clearly does, and of course a good script can be destroyed in the process of filming. I'd actually like to see whedon remake it using the same script, his script, to see just how wonderful it really should have been but that's not going to happen.

Toy Story worked so well because it was a cartoon....a genre where corny dialogue works.

crazy how your movie can make over a billion dollars and your over rated.

If Whedon is over rated then so is Nolan.

Nolan has his problems too. Melodramatic. Action while visually nice, doesn't always make sense, his coverage is poor, also could be an editing problem.

But Nolan >>>>> Whedon. All day.

personal opinions aside how can a movie make over a billion and the director is overrated? Doesn't his body of work speak for him as well? Look at the Avengers which have less of a name then Batman and they did better then his movies. No director is without faults but besides message boards I don't see any critics really give any more praise to Weldon then he deserves.

What I mean is that it's strange that he got the job in the first place, the movie is was ok-good. Think about it for a sec. His only feature film is from 2005, a box office bomb and was continuation of a one season sci-fi show and since then he has directed 3 ep. of Dollhouse, 2 ep. of The Office and a Glee show. It kinda obvious he got the job because of his geek status and I don't think that's reaching. But at the end of the day it's about making money and for a studio to give $220 millions to a man that has created 4 tv shows none of which have been in the top 100 most watched shows in the US and a movie that made no money is weird.

But did really well so, whatever. Would really call it critically successful, at least not in the terms of money it made. 8,3 on imdb and 69 on metacritic.

I get that most of his reverence is due to the fact that he knows geek culture. But the man is a fukking hack. His dialogue sucks. It's cringe-worthy. The back and forth banter between the characters in The Avengers had me embarrassed that I paid $10.50 to watch the movie.

Gotta agree with this. I really didn't like Avengers that much cause the dialog was wack and most of the comedic parts weren't funny at all. Not to mention I hated Cabin in the Woods.. it wasn't funny, it wasn't as creative and fresh as other people made it out to be, it was just two guys placating their own ego's by making a "horror" movie the way they think horror should be done all while beating in to the viewers head with "You get what we're trying to insinuate here?" jokes that were horribly unfunny.

I've never seen any of his other work, but after being disappointed with both movies he put out last year that were mostly heralded and considered top notch films, I have no desire to really check anything else he did out.

He is a comic book guy he was the perfect choice......fukk all the directors who go on board to do a comic book movie just to drastically change what a charater is about

So u just gonna leave out avengers huh?

We gonna pretend that movie doesnt exist?
I thought avengers was a corny movie with very good actors. just cliches on top of one another tbh.

imo xmen first class >>>>>>>>>>> avengers

which is a shame because the acting potential of avengers blows xmen out of the water.

so I agree whedon is not a terribly good big movie director

BUT...firefly is possibly the best sci-fi series of all time tho. buffy prolly the best teenage tv series.

just off firefly alone, which is a masterpiece, whedon cannot be considered overrated imo

Forced comedic situations that weren't a result of the plot, corny wack ass self aware dialog, overly long action sequences, which numbed you to the great VFX.

That Avengers? About the only scene I enjoyed in the entire snooze fest is when they lured the Hulk in. Because it was a clever piece of screenwriting. And the dialogue was clever without being too ham handed. There is not one other memorable scene in the entire movie.

I remember reading about the scene where we are introduced to the Black Widow and thinking :lawd:

And then I saw it on screen :why:

He fukked it with corny dialogue.
