He likely took it to trial to save his career. A plea deal would mean he's guilty of something and that would mean a firing by Disney. Taking it to trial was the only way he could clear his name and thus stay on, even if tainted. Still being part of the MCU would allow him to rebuild some credibility. They weren't going to keep him on with a plea deal just like they aren't keeping him on now.

The crazy thing is that, allegedly, Majors wasn't even supposed to be Kang. Some of the Disney bigwigs were impressed enough by his portrayal as HWR that they combined the two characters making HWR a variant. I'm guessing before that Kang was going to be a different, yet to be cast actor, and his variants played by different actors as well. Realistically they should have cast at least some variants with other actors to mitigate damage from this sort of situation or been prepared to stand by Majors against bad PR but overall inconsequential BS like this. They decided to do neither. Hopefully the implosion of the MCU continues.

Regardless of the charges, he was charged with something in a DV case. It's a minor win (there'll probably be no jail time) for the prosecution to be sure, but it's a win in that half of the people who would watch the movies now see him as woman beater. White people not fukking with him like that, not after becky won her case.

Marvel doesn't want the smoke of having him play the character with people boycotting the movie because "see, why are they letting a woman beater play a character in a kids movie!".

Marvel has faced more pressure with their LBGTQ stuff. They'd be just fine if they'd stay the course.
