Refusing to be released early when given the opportunity to make sure other prisoners of war were released before him and in order is absolutely heroic. All of them, including McCain were brutally tortured for years as prisoners of war. You can die from that kind of torture. So indirectly, he potentially saved other people's lives by making sure they got released before him. Heroic & courageous.
