to be fair they only supported the revolutionaries to bust England's balls. Our relationship has always been tenuous since, ever throughout the world wars.
For sure, but like the saying goes:
I don't care if the cat catches the mouse because he's hungry or because he's sadistic, as long as the mouse is gone.
All countries have up and down relations, especially when you're talking about the span of hundreds of years (thousands for others). Look at Japan-US relations. Hell, look at Vietnam-US relations now.
But the US and France share many similarities aside from just warfare though. A lot of culture has been exchanged. The French Revolution and Constitution was influenced by what the US did.
Plus they share one of the true OGs of all time: Lafayette. A man who was an integral part of two revolutions (American and French), wrote the draft for the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (one of the greatest documents ever written by man), and one of the most hardlined, outspoken critics of slavery (he wanted total worldwide abolition of it).
