It has been five long years since Joey Bada$$ last dropped ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$, an album that is very special to many of the Brooklyn native's fans, including myself.
2000, the sequel to 1999- arguably one of the best mixtapes of all time- came out on the 22nd July, after a few complications with the mixing, fans were able to listen to its entirety for all their delight.
ACCEPT The 27-year-old artist and actor had been a little quiet on the music side of things for the past five years, having dropped the Beast Coast album in 2019 and a three songs pack titled The Light Pack in 2020. His presence in the music industry was greatly missed last year, he who keeps busy with many working roles amongst acting.
But when Joey Bada$$ dropped Head High in March, paying homage to the late XXXTENTACION, his fans knew that we were close to hearing a future classic.
And 2000 proved people right, the 14-tracks project featuring the likes of Diddy, Westside Gunn, Larry June, Chris Brown, Capella Grey and JID is not far from flawless.
The feel for the project is incredible, I reserved myself to listen to the whole project without listening to Where I Belong, Survivor's Guilt and Zipcodss (three out of the four singles) and there were no regrets. Those three songs have a different sound but Joey's message remains the same: reminiscence.
The musicality and artistic scheme of the whole body of work are the reasons it struck me on the first listen, every song has a different production style but the 14 songs all fit perfectly on 2000, Brand New II sounds very jazzy whilst songs like Make Me Feel and Where I Belong have a very boom bap sound to it.
Songs such as Cruise Control and Wanna Be Loved have a unique tempo and each transition between every song is allowing for a great listen.
There aren't many projects this year that balance as excellent of great production throughout, an outstanding theme with great substance, an artistic style the whole way through, plus an emcee as lyrically talented as Joey Bada$$ is, that I have yet to hear, and I've listened to many projects in 2022.
Each guest brought heat to the table, Chris Brown and Capella Grey complemented each other very well on Welcome Back and JID did really well adapting to Joey's tempo on Wanna Be Loved. Larry June is as smooth as he ever has been and Westside Gunn displays his iconic presence as he always does over his most loved adlibs.
Statik Selektah's work on 2000 must not go under the radar, the Boston-born producer showcases his undeniable talent countless times, and played a huge part into making sure all artists work well with each other.
The project contains so many layers, and each and every single one of them are as important, on Survivor's Guilt- a tribute to Capital Steez- Joey Bada$$'s pen is incredible, on such a personal song, which is beautifully written.
2000 is one of the best releases of 2022, objectively, the body of work is coherent in so many ways, from Joey's writing to its production, transitions, boom bap feel and fire features, I look forward to Joey Bada$$ coming over to Europe to perform those songs.
My top three includes: Show Me, Written in the Stars and Where I Belong
