Just finished reading about this

Dan Marino was unbelievable in 1984

It was crazy watching him just destroy everyone

Don Shula wasted the rest of his career

Drafting John Bosa, Sammie Smith, Lorenzo Hampton :hhh:

Maybe he had a once in a generational year? who knows. he did throw for 44 TD's two years later. I mean thats not falling off at all.

Hes the only QB in his era with over 4k yards in a season. And he did it 5 times. He fell off after his 1992 season.
I love this riveting box score based analysis :russ::dead:

Also, every time box score nostalgists go to dikkride Marino, they pretend like he was playing in the Big 8 or something against everyone running the Wing-T. He was NOT the only hyper-productive QB before ESPN2.

The absolute fact is - the passing game opened up league wide in the late 70's after Dan Fouts and the Croyell offense got going. In the early 80's you had randoms like Bill Kinney go off for a 4000 yard season after John Makovich got there. Brian Sipe won the MVP lighting it up in the early 80's. Jay Shroeder, Neil Lomax, Phil Simms etc - the early 80's were pass heavy in the NFL. Marino stood out amongst that crop, but the years of people who don't know anything about football just lying about the league he was in is out of fukking control.

The Dolphins/Marino were the only ones to stick to that all-out passing game afterwards - and they got dominated because of it. The Bills and Jim Kelly were basically running the father of a no-huddle, spread offense the same time.

And why did the Dolphins keep on playing this way? Dan Marino.

If you want a way to think about Marino? Think about the way people talk about Dame Lillard now.

Yes he is supremely talented - but there's always a few crucial things people leave out to explain why he didn't win.

49ers Legend Joe Montana Names Dolphins Icon Dan Marino as Best QB in NFL History

Four-time Super Bowl champion Joe Montana believes that Dan Marino is the best quarterback to ever play football, per comments made in an exclusive interview with Keith Nelson of Men's Health.

"He had a quick release. I had to step into a lot of things to get enough [force] on the ball," Montana said about Marino. "He had the perfect torque of his upper body and strength to deliver the ball quickly at a fast release with accuracy."

Nelson clarified the difference between greatest and best in this case.

"...However, there's a difference between 'greatest' and 'best,' and Montana thinks the latter distinction doesn't belong to him," Nelson wrote. "The title of 'greatest QB' typically refers to career achievements, whereas 'best QB' refers to individual talent."

Marino doesn't own the career accomplishments that other quarterbacks do, but there's no denying his tremendous talent.

He had one of the best and strongest arms in the game and dominated in an era where defenses could take more physical liberties on offensive players, specifically signal-callers.

Nowadays, quarterbacks are far more protected, a luxury that Marino, Montana and others did not benefit from seeing.

"Put Marino into today's game where he gets free release...and his receivers, holy cow, weren't very big," Montana told Nelson. "Now these guys are 6'4," 6'5." I think [Marino] is probably one of the most unsung heroes of the game. People don't talk enough about him or realize the numbers that he put up during the times that he put them up."

Marino led the NFL in passing yards five times and touchdowns on three occasions. His 48 touchdowns in 1984 stood as a single-season record until Tom Brady broke it in 2007 (50). That was since broken by Peyton Manning (55 in 2013).

Marino is still seventh on the all-time passing touchdown list (420), and he's No. 1 among players who never suited up in the 21st century.

He may never have won a Super Bowl, but Marino was a sensational talent who clearly has the respect of one of the best to ever play the game.
Joe is correct

The legend of Dan Marino :russ:

People talk as if he was some god like unicorn at the QB position. Had one amazing season early on and the way people talk, you would think we never saw a talent like that again.

You are literally watching a QB play right now that is better than Marino at ALL facets of the game and surpassed Marinos career accolades by his 3rd year in the league. Crazy shyt.

This is once again a case of being brainwashed to believe old = better

Nobody is saying that but the rules were not the same as they were now

If he played today with a great coach with these rules he would be ridiculous

It’s about where, when and WHO drafts you

You can’t be lazy and rely on that great QB you have to build around him and the Dolphins couldn’t do it

I’m older than you I watched it all unfold

So he’s the best QB because in some ridiculous hypothetical world where literally everything surrounding him is different….he would have put up great numbers.

Got it.

You’re dumb as fukk. That magical season we saw a player break the TD mark for a season by 50% from its past mark.

The mark today is 55 tds. The equivalent to doing what Dan did in 84 would be for someone to throw for 82 tds in a season.

THAT IS WHAT WE SAW IN 1984!

and that is how much of a dumb fukk you are

In 1984 QBs just didn’t come in the league and dominate like that

Even though the league made rule changes in 1978 as far not being able to touch WRs past 5 yards the league was still a defense first league.

That was the mindset.

Dan Marino in 1984 destroyed EVERYBODY

It was like MJ in his rookie season

I’m so glad I was there to see it live :to:
