Yeah, there was a big difference in the Chargers, especially defense, from 79’ to 81’.

Kellen Winslow was still a rookie in 79’ and was yet to revolutionize the TE position. He missed more than half the season. The Chargers had all-Pro John Jefferson though.

They had a highly ranked defense in 79’ and lost in the playoffs to a Houston team missing both Earl Campbell and Dan Pastorini. Football reference has Houston as 8 point underdogs

In 80, Winslow emerged as they still had John Jefferson, but their defensive ranking (per points allowed) went from 2 to 18.

Then in 81’, their defensive ranking went all the way down to 26 (of 28 teams). It doesn’t appear the weather would have made a difference, as Cincinnati beat SD in SD in the regular season 48-17. Cincinnati looked like simply a better team.

I know Dan Fouts did place a lot of blame on himself in the Freezer Bowl though, and said Ken Anderson badly outplayed him and said he was impressed at how Ken could throw in that type of cold.

It appears SD’s best chance was 79’ and they blew that one against a badly compromised Houston team.
