No its not. Most presidential nominees don't name a VP until late July-August. Biden wasn't picked to be VP until the end of August in 2008.

The vetting process is extreme. They should take all the time they need in order to address all concerns before they're announced. Crooked Media has a good 3 hour long series on the VP selection process.

The Vice President nomination does not carry that much weight with voter numbers and has never had any appreciable effect on the outcome of an election if they are even halfway competent. Only stupid choices are negative ie Kaine/Palin/Qualye.

They are there to support, not lead, messaging.

Every election is different. If this were an election without an incumbent, Biden would have to be out front far more than he is. But with a pandemic and an incompetent, historically unpopular incumbent, he just needs to present himself as a calming, competent, but visionary leader and he's done that.
