Even with the premise that Cooper would be an elite defender in todays game.. Waste Michael Cooper on a shooter who is always the fourth option on offense, and can't create off the dribble. It's a stupid conversation from Cooper, driven from ego, what does locking up JJ Reddikk have to do with the modern game today?

Cooper gonna fight off the numerous outside screens that didn't occur in his day? To make sure to stop, JJ f'in Reddikk.. Lol.. He wouldn't guard Paul, or Jamal Crawford against say those Clippers team, instead? We know Byron Scott is playing Redikk, and Redikk would get his 14 easy. If you use Magic to play him, it's too much work.

He's going to switch anyways. Even if he's a defensive savant, you want to waste your defense on a spacing shooter versus actually stopping a perimeter threat?

This is all ego, Coop is not analyzing the structure of the game today into his account. And Redikk is right, the 80s game was soft. And 3s up until probably mid 90s when they moved the 3 line in, basically defenders sagged.

I am not even a guy who believes the new age is totally better, but the sheer ignorance of not taking any change over time into account is absurd. Not demonstrating an accurate account of how its a different game, put your thought into todays context.. Its why they are labeled old heads and not knowledgeable

JJ evolving into a click bait like know it all a$$hole. He knows how to get the convos started and viral.

It's a formula and as this thread shows it works :ld:

He's extremely wrong here though. I'm all the way with Coop.

Learning from Stephen A Smith and Chris Russo.

It's not what you know. Its how outrageous you're willing to be and how loud you can say it.

80s and 90s are two different games.. Ive been watching nbc games since 94. 80s is fast pace, fast break up and down game. It is not the half court game that the 90s early 2000s became.

Pace is higher in the 80s then today:

More fouls called per game 80s then today:

That's 7 more free throws

Just because the jump shot ticky tack fouls of today exist, doesn't mean fouls were more hard to obtain in the post back then to now..

Bird and Erving choking each other, and a tossed ball at laimbeer, doesn't make the game itself more physical

But please, give me your account of how demonstrated information is obsolete

I was thinking the same thing :mjlol:

the absolute confidence borderline arrogance speaking on something you never watched much less add context to.

You respond to a pic of Mark Price with Luka and Jokic?

Mark Price is 6’0” 170 lbs
Jokic is 6’11” 284 lbs
Luka is 6’7” 230 lbs

Old heads can never give a legitimate explanation for why Mark Price was so successful in the supposedly super tough and physical ‘80s.

JJ was a lottery pick, so he had expectations coming out of college. He was a single digit scorer his first four seasons, and for some “strange” reason, his best statistical scoring season came when he was 34 years of age :unimpressed:

I guess he just happened to get better at that age…
JJ is one of the best college scorers of all time. He was a lottery pick for a reason.

He got drafted by an Orlando team that ran a 5-out offense with Dwight in the post. SVG never ran screens to get him open shots. He was forced to be a one-dimensional spot-up shooter until he finally got away from that team.

Put JJ in the ‘80s and he’d be the Nike logo. Dudes like Jeff Hornacek were getting buckets in that era.

That still doesn’t explain why he averaged his highest ppg at age 34. He had been 7 years and 3 different teams removed from Orlando by then.

Hornacek wasn’t getting buckets in the 80s lol. He averaged 20ppg once in his career playing with an up tempo Phoenix Suns team, and that was in the 90s. Also, Hornacek was a much better defender than JJ.
