Modern NBA "fans" y'all. Say you never watched 80's basketball without saying you never watched 80's basketball.Even with the premise that Cooper would be an elite defender in todays game.. Waste Michael Cooper on a shooter who is always the fourth option on offense, and can't create off the dribble. It's a stupid conversation from Cooper, driven from ego, what does locking up JJ Reddikk have to do with the modern game today?
Cooper gonna fight off the numerous outside screens that didn't occur in his day? To make sure to stop, JJ f'in Reddikk.. Lol.. He wouldn't guard Paul, or Jamal Crawford against say those Clippers team, instead? We know Byron Scott is playing Redikk, and Redikk would get his 14 easy. If you use Magic to play him, it's too much work.
He's going to switch anyways. Even if he's a defensive savant, you want to waste your defense on a spacing shooter versus actually stopping a perimeter threat?
This is all ego, Coop is not analyzing the structure of the game today into his account. And Redikk is right, the 80s game was soft. And 3s up until probably mid 90s when they moved the 3 line in, basically defenders sagged.
I am not even a guy who believes the new age is totally better, but the sheer ignorance of not taking any change over time into account is absurd. Not demonstrating an accurate account of how its a different game, put your thought into todays context.. Its why they are labeled old heads and not knowledgeable
