This was dope. People really sleep on JD's skills as a songwriter and beatmaker. I know Puff gets all the credit for being a "producer" but JD actually writes lyrics and makes beats. Made a lot of stars and repped for the ATL when no one was doing it outside of The Dungeon Family.
I mean I won't deny the fact that he did jump around from style to style but it aint like we aint know he was from ATL and making noise. True he wasn't waving ATL pom poms but back then like 3K said they didn't really have an identity. This is a huge reason why he's underrated. JD didn't start reppin Atlanta until AFTER Outkast and Goodie blew up. I know people cite those So So Def Bass compilations, but the first one didn't drop until 1996. Jermaine says he put the world up on Magic City, but Kast was talking about Magic City back in 1994. JD had the opportunity to put several Atlanta rappers including Ludacris. Before JD even dropped "Welcome To Atlanta", there was a skit with the same title on Kast's debut. He made a "Welcome To Atlanta" remix with NO Atlanta rappers besides himself.
Jermaine Dupri is a great producer and songwriter, but he jumps on bandwagons AFTER it blows instead of introducing us to these trends BEFORE they pop off. Crunk blew up in 2003, so he scoops up Bone Crusher and Youngbloodz (they appeared on Life In 1472, why not sign and push them then). Lil Jon was kind of discovered by JD, but all we got from Jon's So So Def days was Ghostown DJ's "My Boo". DJ Toomp was around that camp too.
Passing up on Luda who was a radio DJ at the time shouldn't be a slight to him.
Usher just dropped another track todayREALLY wish he and Usher would have dropped that Confessions 2. Was getting so hyped up, and now just total silence. Really looked forward to it, but not sure we will get it anymore.
Hell most of ATL wasn't taking Chris Luva Luva serious as a rapper back then anyway and even if they did I'm sure they were weary about how to promote him. Sometimes it's hard to get that stain off of you and JD's track record was with younger rappers who he mostly wrote for and R&B (again what he mostly wrote for). I don't take it as a detriment to JD like most, I just see it as not being the right fit back then and it ended up working out for both of them.It is kind of a slight because even when Luda was a DJ, he ended up on Timbaland's song "Phat Rabbit" and that was when people knew Luda could rap. Luda was networking while he was a DJ. I'm sure JD was familiar with Luda, but we didn't get a JD/Luda song until Luda dropped Incognegro.
he's way too humble IMOI love JD as a producer with every fiber of my being

jermaine has never been an original.
he will wait to see what's hot and jump on it.
Dre: The West Coast sound is his.
Premier: Pretty much the Gawd of back pack rappers.
Timbaland: Hands down the most original producer in HIPHOP.
Pharrell: you know it's a Pharrell/Neptunes beat....no question.
