Chris Jericho has been around the professional business long enough to know a couple things about keeping a career alive. He's been able to reinvent his in-ring persona many times and continues as one of the best sports entertainers alive today.

At 47-years-old, Jericho is IWGP Intercontinental Champion and experiencing a fresh breath of life to his career with his continued involvement with Fozzy as well, but he always has time to give advice when he feels it's warranted.

"I've wrestled a few times now," Jericho recently said on Talk Is Jericho. "I'm gonna go on record here -- uh-oh Jericho spews the truth -- guess what guys? Great matches don't matter -- here's the secret to wrestling -- personalities and character. That's all that matters."

Will Ospreay is an amazing professional wrestler and at 25-year-old, he has a lot of his career ahead of him. The Aerial Assassin is known for his impressive tactics in the ring and high spots that wow the crowds, but one recent move caused Y2J to call Ospreay about it.

When Ospreay nailed Marty Scurll with a Spanish fly on the apron at Sakura Genisis on April 1st, Ospreay was busted wide open when his head hit the apron. Jericho didn't like seeing that one bit and phoned the Englishman to give him some words of wisdom.

"I told him," Y2J said of Ospreay after he smashed his head on the ring apron. "People were predicting he's gonna be the next Dynamite Kid. I called him on the phone and said, 'dude you do not want to be the next Dynamite Kid. I want you to be around when you're 47 just like me kicking ass. Stop doing stupid moves that don't mean anything."

Jericho said Ospreay agreed with him and since then his matches have been "much cleaner."

"It's not supposed to be good!"

I remember when the story that quote came from first popped up on here and I quoted that one line in huge font bold letters like 5 times. :mjlol:

I think it was his reaction to someone saying his idea for what was basically a retired wrestler royal rumble wasn't going to be a good match. In his mind as long as Hacksaw Jim Duggan or whomever got the crowd to pop cause he showed up. People were entertained.

Nowadays it's more who has "The Look" or has pull with casual non-wrestling fans than it is how great your matches are. But WWE has always been about "The Show" first, and in-ring performance second. It didn't hurt when your best in ring characters were decent in the ring, but I digress.

Contrast WWF's Rock n' Wrestling through the Monday Night Wars with NWA/WCW. Or even the territories. You had colorful characters over here, you had borderline flabby dudes in colorful trunks over there. 9 times out of 10, if they got swiped by WWF they'd become a character. The Red Rooster. The Texas Tornado. The Big Boss Man. The Million Dollar Man. The Undertaker.

I wanna say "you can't always have one without the other and it work", but I'm not a casual. I'm a mark who doesn't watch the program. I'd rather watch flippy shyt and chinese wrestling where I don't understand the commentators.

I have no idea what a filthy casual likes. :yeshrug:

Maybe us marks need to shut the fukk up about the product and go watch what we like.

edit: sorry for this mini article (:heh: holy shyt didn't we call these long winded posts "Titantrons" on another message board? Oh, the irony). I'm waiting for the meds and vodka to kick in.

Play fighting has moved away from characters and charisma many years ago, that’s why it’s now niche entertainment. The same people that watch the WWF also watch NXT, ROH, TNA, NCPW, it’s all the same audience

The problem is that for smaller guys the only way to get noticed is to either be great technically or a great high flyer. If the only thing he can do is talk well, he's manager status.

Also I have general question for TSC, why does everyone think high flying moves are bad when Luchadores wrestle a high flying style for years and have long careers?

The only real problem with this notion though is that, what's the point of watching wrestling without caring about the matches? We can get better characters and storylines for 9.99 on Netflix or Hulu. The only two things WWE has against other TV shows is that they never have reruns and have multiple action scenes.

What’s the point of watching a fake fight with no personal investment in characters or story?

Hoegan/Rock at Wrasslemania 18 would get a -10 star rating by today’s audience

I'm not saying only have great matches and nothing else but you can't say they don't matter at all.

They go hand in hand. Example Rocky I wouldn't have been so well received without the ending fight where we see him try to go the distance even though he knows he can't beat Apollo Creed.

The first 2/3rds of the movie built up to the fake fight we see at the end.
