Looking back, JBL was a fantastic heel. There was nothing cool or interesting about him. He was a steak-eating, white Republican millionaire that talked down to everyone he came across. And he knew people hated him, but he didn't give a fukk because he thrived on that.

He would be a money character in 2020. :wow:

So making money is a failure? :skip:

It’s well known true heels are hard to come by, especially in today’s world. There’s also the cool heel, which is the one mostly seen today.

Kayfabe sort of evolved to where the fans that’s left, largely are fans for in ring. Those that are considered good wrestlers are faces and those perceived as poor wrestlers are the heels. Vince McMahon would be able to manipulate this when he was in his 40s and had his finger on the pulse.

This is true. The Roman Reigns push from 2015-2018 they kind of took advantage of it, but they could have REALLY took advantage of it at times and had red hot crowds.

I get that people pretty much cheer what they want now, but it makes zero sense to be a heel and play to the audience... that much is correct about what JBL said. People don't like what's bein' said because it was said by him, but it's true. Especially when it concerns these heels that come off as smart, funny, and cooler than the people they're against... that shyt only really worked for '80s Flair, "Mr. MacMahon", and the NWO as far as having fans wanna see them get beat. Everyone else who does this only ends up getting turned babyface.

This is what I think JBL and people like him don't get. I don't necessarily think he's wrong, since the heel's job is to ensure that everyone loves and gets behind the babyface, but the money you make as a heel is no longer directly tied to the gate receipts (which would incentivize a heel striving to be the most heelish part of a hot feud). It's not even tied to PPV buys in WWE, which would also incentivize despicable heel work in a similar manner. It's most tangibly tied to merch sales and a wrestler's media persona, which incentivizes being a cool heel. Beyond the old school perspective, JBL didn't need to worry about that because he's legitimately filthy stinking rich, but 99% of wrestlers don't have that luxury (ESPECIALLY today), therefore we get more heels trying to leave the "despicable persona" at the door, so to speak.

You want fewer cool heels, change the conditions in which one has to be a heel.
