It's not bad. Good background noise for me since I work from home during this pandemic. I'll say, that church episode that had the emotional ending was too soon. What was that, like episode 2 or 3? That shoulda been the season ender IMO. You gotta give shows time to breathe if you want the audience to feel an emotional tug with the characters. Especially a sitcom.
It just felt off.
Episode 1: Silly episode where we are introduced to the characters
Episode 2: emotional episode where we still barely know the characters
Episode 3: back to the silly episodes again
...bad flow.
Jamie tries to do the Eddie Murphy multiple characters thing but he doesn't pull it off as seamlessly but also doesn't seem to be giving the characters his all like prime, hungry, young Jamie would have.
But like I said, still a solid show and much better than 'Kenan' which is also doing the story trope of single, black father raising daughter(s) whose mom passed suddenly. What Jamie's show has working for it is its in the binge format so even though the show isn't great you can still find yourself knocking it out in a day or two. I gave Keenan's show a shot and by episode 3 I simply lost interest. It wasn't funny enough to dedicate me reserving time every Tuesday night to watching it.
You compared it to Eddie, as did I, but when reading your post, I thought that it reminded me more of Martin
