I watched this yesterday and it has its moments where I legitimately laughed out loud but for the most part, the show is extra mid. The writing for the daughter was jarring because they had her acting out like a brat too much. The last episode reminded me of those cheesy PSA episodes from sitcoms back in the 90s :mjlol:

I'm supporting this because it's Jamie and a majority black cast. Also because I'm not the type to clutch my pearls over a show like Them while simultaneously writing off the "black people doing normal shyt" shows I supposedly wanna see more of. It's mid, but so are the majority of white family sitcoms that get Emmy noms every year:yeshrug:

It's not bad. Good background noise for me since I work from home during this pandemic. I'll say, that church episode that had the emotional ending was too soon. What was that, like episode 2 or 3? That shoulda been the season ender IMO. You gotta give shows time to breathe if you want the audience to feel an emotional tug with the characters. Especially a sitcom.

It just felt off.
Episode 1: Silly episode where we are introduced to the characters
Episode 2: emotional episode where we still barely know the characters
Episode 3: back to the silly episodes again
...bad flow.

Jamie tries to do the Eddie Murphy multiple characters thing but he doesn't pull it off as seamlessly but also doesn't seem to be giving the characters his all like prime, hungry, young Jamie would have.

But like I said, still a solid show and much better than 'Kenan' which is also doing the story trope of single, black father raising daughter(s) whose mom passed suddenly. What Jamie's show has working for it is its in the binge format so even though the show isn't great you can still find yourself knocking it out in a day or two. I gave Keenan's show a shot and by episode 3 I simply lost interest. It wasn't funny enough to dedicate me reserving time every Tuesday night to watching it.

Also, I'm still surprised his daughter isn't starring in it. I guess they wanted the high school age range angle but Jamie been trying to give his daughter a push in front the cameras for years now. Figured he'd alter the show's premise any and every which way to get his daughter the starring role. They both may be settling on the idea of her being better off behind the camera though cuz she hasn't caught on as an actress yet.

I saw a clip of it scrolling through Netflix. I honestly thought it was a parody. The kind of show that you would see characters watch on TV. I couldn't take any of it seriously, only to find out that it's not a joke.

I'm honestly shocked that in 2021, people are still making sitcoms like this. :dwillhuh:

This was hard to watch. How does an Oscar winner like Jamie make some cringe worthy shyt like this....ditch the laugh track and do it either Bernie Mac Show/Everybody Hates Chris style or go full Issa Rae Insecure since there was plenty adult humor in this mixed with the corniness

I really want to like this show, but it seems so formulaic and mediocre, Jamie is ok but I feel he's outgrown this type of thing and the show is being carried by people like DAG and Luenuell who have been steady in the sitcom game for so much longer (recently) that they understand tone and timing a lot better.
