James Harrison: I spend $400K-$600K on my body per year - CBSSports.com

Sometimes, we refer to the excesses of the rich, professional football player. Sometimes it's an expensive night at the bar. Sometimes it's a ridiculously huge truck. And sometimes it's this.

“My body is what helps me to make money,” new Bengals linebacker James Harrison said Tuesday in his introductory news conference. "Whatever there is that I need to do to try and make myself better or get myself healthy, I'm going to do it. It wouldn't be unreasonable to say that I spend anywhere between $400,000 and $600,000 on body work, as far as taking care of my body, year-in and year-out.”

In case you missed it, I'll copy/paste the quote.

"It wouldn't be unreasonable to say that I spend anywhere between $400,000 and $600,000 on body work, as far as taking care of my body, year-in and year-out.”

In a word, "!!!!"

I mean, I've heard of NFL players treating their bodies like temples, but I didn't realize you'd have to buy the entire congregation as well.

How exactly does one spend a half-million dollars a year on his body, anyway (the most important question being: that can't possibly be worth it, right?)?

“As far as training, I have a hyperbaric chamber,” Harrison said. “I rent a hyperbaric chamber when I'm in Arizona. I have massages, and I bring people in from New York, Arizona to where I'm at. There's that cost. Like I said, I get body work almost every single day except Saturday and Sunday. I have a homeopathic doctor, and I do a lot of homeopathic things. It's just a lot -- supplements, so on and so forth.”

That's a hell of a lot of supplements, though.

Said Harrison: “I've got a masseuse, got an acupuncturist, got a trainer, got another masseuse and another masseuse and a homeopathic doctor. I think that's it.”

As crazy as those figures are, I think we all can agree on this: $500,000 just doesn't go as far as it used to, you know?

I don't doubt it. I bet Kobe drops $500K-1m every year just trying to stay in shape. Most of that probably goes to Tim Grover.

Chef, nutritionist, trainer, doctor, yoga, etc. etc. it adds up.

Side note: There's no way Grover isn't pulling down at least a mil just by himself between Wade, Kobe, and a few others.

if his body is his livelihood, I dont see the problem in protecting your investment. if it cost him 500k to make $5M annually, then it's obviously well worth it.

Smart fukking man. And you don't need 500k either if we wanna be real about it.

But if I was making that much I'd probably spend that much too.

That number seems high, but I can see it reaching into the 6 figure range when you factor in a round the clock trainer, chef, 2 masseuses, chiropractor, supplements, etc....

This is what Shannon Sharpe spends, and he's retired..

Cost & Gear
Mr. Sharpe estimates that he spends $30,000 a year on meals, gear, training fees and his gym membership. "I probably spend $600 a week on food alone," he says. He spends approximately $2,500 to $3,000 every three months on personal training

folks aren't realizing he's talking about everything from nutrition, rehab, prevention, exercise etc

he may be overestimating, but you have to remember he's coming off of a couple of injury plagued seasons. I have no idea what type of healthcare premium nfl players pay, but I imagine it has to be pretty hefty.
