It's not a symptom of anything but people choosing who they want or don't want to crucify based on arbitrary and really murky, non-uniform standards on what's socially acceptable and how much they care about the person. Consider the irony of the situation in that the person who dug up those tweets was some alt-right cac who also made rapey jokes in the past. Not saying it changes the situation, but the irony of it is telling
If the cast really wants to make a statement and stand by him they should refuse to do the film without him

The whole reason alt-right people went after him is because he is online playing verbage police on them. If you want to play by those rules you can die by them to.
And really don't feel sorry for James Gunn, he made more than a decent living off the franchise and I'm sure when this blows over he will get more work. It's really not a big deal or life changing for him. I'm sure someone else is more than capable taking over the franchise as well.
